Just a little update...
Doing a little bit of testing tonight with SCSI-IDE off the CyberSCSI, once I messed with the settings a little I'm getting some pretty decent read speeds :cool:

So my A4000T Mobo is with Hikey and he confims the u22f Caps have leaked on the main board and Audio board so he will be changing them for me, hopefully this solves my issues.
Just tested my CSPPC with PicassoIV and Deneb on A4000D Test bed setup with 350w ATX PSU + Adapter I got from Juvvy today and all that kit is working great so I guess the A4kT mobo is the issue.
I'm looking forward to testing the board with the new caps :)

I have one A4000T too and I sloooOOOooowly going to do something similar but I'm always amazed by the speed of your projects and all the tests you do and share with us... Very helpful, mate. :bowdown:
Another thing I like is the smart "gadgets" you always manage to find to make your projects absolutely unique. Killing details. Here I've noticed a very smart combo DVD with card readers, etc. Are you going to make it work too ???

Its a CDRW with built in USB card reader, CD is hooked up to my X-Surf IDE port with IDEFix software so is reading CD's just fine. I have a small adapter so that I can use the Card reader on the internal USB port on the Deneb, it is all setup and working too. I can just pop in an SD or CF and they mount with SFS or FAT partitions :cool:
Hikey has fully recapped my Motherboard and he says its 100% stable so hopefully when it returns I will be able to get the machine working exactly as I want it :)

Did you buy the CDRW brand new ? I saw it from IOMEGA but I believe it's a model that went out in 2004... That's perhaps more recent than the A4000 but it's harder to find. :p
Looking forward to the results of OS4.1 installation. I just received my copy from Amigakit but the A4000 is stored a container for at least 2 months... I'm so impatient to play with it again !

As promised I've taken pics of the rebuild today, sadly after all this my issue remains :(
I had to wiggle the PicassoIV to get any booting and later removed it. Now although it runs I have to keep reseating the Deneb, I'm going to clean all the contacts again with IPA and after that I think I'll give up with this project, it's just too much of a headache and not practical after the case is back together to reseat cards whenever I want to use it.
The A4000T Motherboard worked perfect on Hikey's setup so I have some other issue here amoungst my parts that stops all the zorro cards from being picked up at every boot. All the parts seem to work individually but when all installed together it's trouble time (and of course I have tested another PSU and also on my A4000D Motherboard - the issue remains)

Does this happen with all the Zorro ports? Maybe the connectors need replacing or there is a short somewhere... I bet they are not easy to get hold of if that is the case :(Quote:

Can you swap the CSPPC 64Mhz Crystal for a 50Mhz one?
I see from the first posting of Pics that there are only 2 Crystals fitted to the card. Because they haven't fitted the Third one & moving a small resistor between ram slots 1 & 2 (doing this enables the 3rd Crystal socket) your SCSI is running in Sync with your Overclocked 060, & thats @ 64Mhz. This is why you are seeing the instabilities. Long term exposure to these bus speeds will eventually kill your card as the cards logic will become fried. Those big black chips between Ram slots 1 & 2 get hot & even hotter @ 64Mhz. Without adequate air flow, preferably a fan blowing across the board between the ram slots 1 & 2, your card will eventually die.
Move the resistor, install the 3rd socket, put the 64Mhz one in it & a 50Mhz back in the one currently fitted with the 64Mhz & your stability should return, if you haven't already half fried the cards logic of course.

I'm sure this will stop your issue & prevent the card from dying. Put it in your A4KD & run it is asking for an earlier death of a CSPPC card. Trust me.

Firstly, thanks for your post! It was not me who did the overclock, this is how the card came to me.
On inspection the 64mhz x-tal isn't even properly soldered in place, it has been pushed into the old solder holes :o
So with that I was able to easily swap it for a 50mhz one, and to my surprise with all my zorro cards in place including the PicassoIV it has booted first time :bowdown:
It remains to be seen if it will boot next time, but I take this as a good sign. I just hope no lasting damage has been done.
It was strange becuase without the zorro cards the CSPPC would always boot at 64mhz, I guess it just gets unstable when you add expansions?
I'll update ya'll, but I think I will need to get someone to fit the x-tal properly as I don't want to put my soldering iron anywhere near this card! :butcher

Maybe 060 socket is an issue?
As you know it's SMD socket with tendence to creating solder cracks (very small) between CSPPC PCB and socket.
One day card can work without issues, second day no boot, but it should boot if 060 is pressed (to get contact).
I know this because I've replaced 5 sockets on CSPPC already.
Please check A4000T with another CPU card. If everything will be fine place CSPPC again and press 060 on the top and power-on. If you will have boot - 060 socket is an issue.
And please do not recap CSPPC. Capacitors used there are very good quality. No need to replace.

The CSPPC is a multi-layer board & just leaving a loose Crystal placed into the PCB is really asking for problems. You can fit a socket, but on some CSPPC cards, there is not enough room to have a Socket + Crystal with a SIMM module in the first slot. Some CSPPC cards used SIMM sockets with a higher angle, but not entirely upright, & these fortunate cards allow you to get away with a Socket + Crystal height.
A 64Mhz overclock on the 060 is safe, but you should apply an Active Cooled Heatsink & move that resistor to enable your 3 Crystal socket placement on the CSPPC. This will then allow you to run the SCSI Async with the 64Mhz 060 & will prevent a premature death. As I said earlier, with the 060 & SCSI running in Sync @ 64Mhz, those big black chips between SIMM sockets 1 & 2 will get very hot & constant expossure to these high temps will eventually kill the card.
Overclockability of these cards is no different to the A1200 versions. Both have the caveats & the way in which stachu100 mods the A1200 cards is to fit a faster PPC chip. You can squeeze a bit more by moving the resistors around for the PPC & this can also be done on the CSPPC cards too. If you look at the link I showed you earlier, there are two ways to overclock the PPC chip.
In all honesty though, overclocking 20+ year old computer equipment is on the edge stuff. It's a wonder they still work @ stock speeds after this time, so why run the risk of killing it a whole pile sooner?
I'm sure that if you just solder a 50Mhz Crystal in place of the 64Mhz one, all will be good, but equally, moving the resistor & fitting the 3rd Crystal @ 64Mhz with a 50Mhz one where the 64Mhz one is at present will still leave you with a very safe Overclock. Just remember that Async is safe, Sync as it is now is not. :thumbsup:
My 2 cents worth on A4KD's & A4KT's with CSPPC cards is absolutely no difference. Stock speeds or overclocked. All I could say on the matter is that all your hardware in an A4KT will be a lot cooler than A4KD, just down to air flow or the lack of it as in A4KD. Overclock components & obviously you are generating more heat. Do the math. ;)

I don't know about the upgrade jobs Stan (or others) made on PPC boards, but I tought is not only a change of the PPC/060 and he also change crystals and capacitors needed for that upgrades.
I have one 060/66 PPC/363 upgraded by Stan, and works fine, no crashes, no "Gurus"..... like a "new" sotck one. Of course, I have good fans installed so the board is cool all time.
The overall speed between 060/50-060/66 and PPC/233-PPC/363 is really a big difference and one well upgraded board is, in my opinion, recommendable.

Unless you can fully appreciate over clocking & the consequences for doing it one way over another, then what I have tried to explain above is always going to be a bit of a mental block. I can't really explain it any other way than I have & do not mean to make it all sound complicated. Either you understand how the bus speeds are controlled or you don't. ;)
What I didn't mention earlier is the 2nd (middle) crystal actually runs through a divide by 2 counter for the SCSI & ram speed, so the 64Mhz Overclock is actually forcing the RAM & the SCSI to 32Mhz from 25Mhz. Slowing the cards RAM speed to 70ns can help with 60ns RAM in place, yet I wonder what 50ns modules would allow on an overclock. It could help greatly, but the cards Logic is still @ risk due to heat.

Faster PPC Chips have a bigger Multiplier than the slower ones. Using a higher Multiplier on a PPC CPU with the same Bus speed is the safest way to overclock it. You can however push for more on a Stock 233Mhz CPU by changing resistors & forcing a bigger Multiplier on the CPU. Your mileage will vary as no two pieces of silicon are ever truly identical. I don't know if 68xxx CPU's have multipliers available in their technology & may be locked (burnt in) after soak testing following manufacture. I doubt it tbh as no accelerator board for the Amiga using 68xxx architecture has ever had the ability to move resistors to change the Multiplier & thereby increase the CPU speed with a fixed bus speed.

Of course, I know the "price" maybe you "pay" using overclocked boards, is the same in all computers new, and older ones. But, with 20 years old hw, also the stock ones can go :thumbsdown:
Maybe I'm wrong, or you have a different opinion...... But if you have the knowledge about the design and possibilities of these boards -me not- and installs, good CPU's, crystals, capacitors,...... I tought is not a problem to use overcloked ones.

as for the 060 and 603 parts stan puts on the 1200 version of this, there rated at 300mhz anyway(stan can correct me if he likes)plus the 060's he puts on these are rev 6's,on both cards the scsi parts will give up long before the 060 will.

The issues I've been having don't seem to be due to the overclocking of the 060 although I'm sure it is much safer to keep her at 50mhz unless we change the chips like you say.
I'm tempted to send the card off to stachu for a make over though :cool:
I'll probably end up using the Cybervision PPC in another project as this A4000T just seems too fragile, always has something wrong with it that I can pinpoint, just when you think you've fixed it something else fails and if you read back I've tested all the components in different setups and all work perfect on their own including the A4000T and have tried of course two other PSU's, there is just something that all this hardware don't like when it all comes together, almost like an incompatibility.

Well I thought I'd try something different with this A4000T and see if I could get it running with some proper stability.
Well, so far it seems like I have!
I've pulled the CSPPC as I think this is where the problem lies so I will get the Crystal soldered properly by one of our resident Guru's :bowdown:
In the interim I'm testing the setup with my CSMkII overclocked to 66mhz and using the A4000T's onboard SCSI to get around the issue you get with Cyberstorms overclock SCSI boards (I thought that was a pretty cool idea) :cool:
I've hooked it up as usual to an IDE HDD via one of my Yamaha SCSI-IDE adapters.
I've also plumbed in one of my DKB3128's which seems to be working great now, maybe they just don't like CSPPC's?
