DVD Ripping

Hi all, i know this a retro forum but we have some clever guys round here so im hoping someone might be able to help me.

My 2 and 3 year old daughters adore Peppa Pig, Dora the Explorer and The Fimbles and they have an original xbox console running xbmc hooked up to their tv in the bedroom for viewing before bed.

The problem is the dvd drive is dead so i've disconnected it, flashed a no dvd bios to the consoles tsop and installed a large hard drive to fill with some of their dvds.

I want to rip the dvd into individual episodes so i can put one on for a 10-15 minute viewing before they go to sleep.

I have used dvdshrink to rip the dvd's to my pc but they are still around 4gb and preserve the dvd standard so all the menu's and features and stuff are still present and each episode is played in order so it can go on for hours.

So does anyone have a recommendation of a program that can rip their dvds to individual episode's in a format compatible with the original xbox?

um i have atut some where...

here it is on my old website lol, please dont steal it.. some 1 did once. and they incurred my full wrath of ping flood knowlage, including the wrath of many friends.

(i also changed the pics to naughty ones and reported theire page and got it banned of google)
on the other hand all you have to do is give credit if you do use it els where and no wrath will happen.

Yep - as Gouldin says - Handbrake is free and very powerful. I've been using it for some time now. Works on Mac and Windows.

DVD shrink was popular a loooooong time go?

But I'm am apple guy so I can't help , can you not convert to avi?

handbrake is no good for the original xbox. Original xbox its better to have xvid and handbrake stopped supporting xvid a long time ago. If you can find the working download where handbrake supported xvid I would love to have it, I think it was 0.9.3

@thread, i tried handbrake last night, got the old 0.9.3 version, but when i started the process it was going for about 3 hours and then said it had finished.

The resulting file was a 50Gb avi file that wouldn't play. Tried it again with a different dvd and got the same result but slightly smaller file size.

Make sure you have output as avi and codec as xvid. Also you can set the target output size in the options. It should take about 15 mins to rip one movie to one 700meg CD. One pass. Look at the settings and add a target size.

But if you set avi and also set the xvid codec with same framerate as original. You should get nothing above 1.4gb

The settings i used were avi file with the avi (xvid) codec, framerate same as the original, 2-pass encoding (not sure what this one does but thats the default setting).
It took about 3 hours and left me a 50Gb file that wouldn't play at all.
Same settings with a different dvd but left me a file around 45Gb that again wouldn't play.

Hmmmmm it should not do that, I figured you set avi, but left the codec as x264. set avi and then the codec to mpeg(xvid) under video options. Then try to set 700meg as output size, depending on film size. 700meg for a movie of around 1h30mins should be ok. Anything above should be 1.4gb. Depending on action scenes. Also set it as one pass, it will take half the time.
