Project: A500 running OS3.9

The aim is to get my A500 rocking 3.9 as I don't really find ClassicWB works for whdload regardless of what amiga I've it on :huh: and I like to install my programs, feels more like my setup if that makes sense :nuts:

The spec of things I have to play with and choose from:

A500: Rev5, Kick 1.3, Generic 512kb Ram expansion

A500: Rev6A, Kick 3.1, A501 512kb Ram mapped to chipram for 1MB chip.

M-Tec 68020i, 14mhz, 1/4mb ram (Only gives out 4 though :( ) - Supplied By John_Hare

A590, 20MB XT Ide drive, low revision roms, 0mb Ram. - Supplied By John_Hare

AlfaPower 500, Unknown revision of rom, 6mb zip ram, 3gb 2.5 ide hdd. - Supplied By John_Hare

CD-Rom drive IDE

To Be delivered:

A590 V7 Rom - Courtesy of Zetr0 :thumbsup:
9GB SCSI HDD - again from Zetr0 :)
2MB Ram for A590
New PSU for the A590/500 which Zetr0 is being awesome again and making :D
SCSI CD-Rom which will be fitted externally to A590

8MB Zip for Alfapower :) - Mr TBTorro

2GB CF and IDE adaptor
1GB CF and IDE adaptor - Both Mr fitzsteve ***Since been delivered***

Will post pics soon, more of a placeholder thread at the moment for when I start putting what I can together and help me keep track of my own progress as I have a forgetful mind :p


Stage 1: Working out the maximum amount of ram I can get from the devices in question without crashing.

Combo 1: M-Tec ram enabled and AlfaPower ram enabled = 9mb but crashes a lot :mad:

Combo 2: M-Tec ram disabled and AlfaPower ram enabled = 6mb ram, HDD not happy writing :mad:

Combo 3: M-Tec ram enabled, alfapower ram disabled = solid 4 mb of ram :thumbsup:

Other Combo's will have to wait until I get the new psi and ram for the A590.

Only problem I can see with the M-Tec and 4MB of ram is that OS3.9 requires 6mb fast ram so some tweaking is going to be needed :mad:

I'm afraid it won't be a pleasant experience anyway because of the limited ECS chipset. Why don't you use and tweak a nice 3.1?

Concerning the RAM, prefer to use 32 bits RAM from your accelerator only IMHO.

You know Xanxi, if we manage and isolate the uncompatible modules -and I speak for my A2000 from my side-, I dont see why someone not run a CWOS3.9 on his miggy!?:roll: But we need some serious help from the author Mr Bloodwitch!

I know it won't run as nice as my old A1200 with 1230 in it, but I'd like to try, I just find OS3.9 a lot more complete, things like cdfs, tcp/ip etc are good to go with nice gui's without configuring and looking for all the add ons required by the apps on aminet. Not only that, most apps I find on aminet that are like the OS3.9 equivalent are usually shareware and I have no intention of paying :D

I figure, later on down the line I could perhaps upgrade to a super denise? I assume that would help a bit.

So, question then, how do I get the M-Tec ram recognised as 32bit ram, sys info shows it as 24bit? :blink:

Going from that, would it be possible to have 4mb 32bit ram and then say 8mb 24bit running alongside it for a healthy 12mb? Noob question, but this project is mostly for me to learn about the OS and get the most from my amiga :cool:

If it does run really badly, then yes I might try making a custom 3.1 install, but I'd like to try 1st.

I'm running CWB OS3.9 on my A2000 (with GVP A3001 - 030@28MHz, GVP HC+8 & Picasso II) no problem chaps, std ECS mode is only 16 Colours but it all runs fine..:cool:

hmmm, just looked at the M-Tec 68020i software disk, looks like it has some very handy utilities on it to make it play nice with my other kit, but it's in german :mad:

Anyone know where/ if a english copy exists as google translate isn't cutting it. Also my GCSE in german is failing me :D

Only place I could find it, I get the feeling that they never did an english disk :o

Why jerk psodas? I've seen AmigaOS 3.9 running under 68000!!! :D
