Generic USB card for Elbox spider.device

This small modification makes it possible to use a generic USB pci card
with Elbox's spider.device driver v3.21

Reprogram the serial EEPROM 24C02 as shown in photo so that the pci vendor information matches that of a Elbox Spider card.

Card tested: HP KU-204IN HP Spares# 412839-001 (NEC D720101GJ chipset)

If anyone wants me to whip off that part, reprogram it and resolder it returned I can do that.

Knowing this information though it is probably possible to write a program for the PC to write this flash? Does the PCB support in circuit programming?

And a completely off-the-wall question, but can you use an Elbox Spider card in a regular PC? Not sure why you'd want to, just curious to know if it's been done!

I imagine if you hack the driver yes. It is after all just a PCI card.

Indeed. One assumes that you could do the inverse hack on the firmware and turn it into the generic card being discussed above. I just wondered if there were any native drivers for it.

More relevant to my interests, can you use an Elbox Spider on an Amiga with a non-Mediator PCI solution?

I'm not sure why you'd want to but yeah. On the PC it's probably much easier to change the driver (or force install one) than to change the Mediator PCI code on the Amiga side to accept a generic PCI ID?

I remember when Elbox had inserted a code into the Mediator files that detect a wrong vendor ID on the Spider and then simply erase the HD RDB when a certain code was found.

Test with a backup HD!

I am proud to inform that it works like a charm :lol: . Finally USB on my Amiga :lol: . I have changed eeprom as described by hikey, installed spider.device in USBHardware folder in DEVS, install Poseidon v4 with default settings, run TRident and point spider.device, restart and :lol: USB stick is recognized :) . Thanks hikey and johnim for help :bowdown: :roll: and hail to Chris Hodges :bowdown: and elbox team for spider.device

I understand high price for zorro cards or CPU cards as hardware has to be invented from scratch but generic card?

I fully understand you, I'm not here to blame you about your work, actually it seems that you did it fine. I'll agree though about the price, especially for Spider II USB 2.0 card.

It's supposed that you buy the Mediator PCI in return that you will use cheaper PCI cards (as they are much cheaper than any Zorro cards), but I have to agree that the price for this USB card is very high. I really don't know why, especially this card, must have a high value. I don't want to say a price here (probably it will be considered as price-driving) of what a correct price might be.

Transfer from USB stick is not great only 850k/s . It is fine with me as I will only use it for trouble-free transferring files from PC but I would expect more :huh:

But I think it's the Mediator limitation, SATA PCI Card only gets 3mb/sec :thumbsdown:

I think your speed is about the same as the SubwayUSB.

I never had any Spider II in the past and I never saw any speeds comparison. Is that the default speeds that Spider II can achieve?

That is not good. The card is selling as Hi-Speed USB2.0 card, a bit misleading don't you think :dry:?

That is why it is worth to pay more money for a good device :) .

Here's some benchmark of E3B's USB cards...

Looks like it has perfromance similar to Algor... way slower than the Deneb but still a couple of times faster than the Subway.

@Bebek can you try USB2.0 external HDD and connect it directly to one of the Spider's USB ports and try again for the speed benchmark?

I found some USB sticks are slow even on my Deneb.

I have checked and it is the same, around 860k/s .
