Kickswitcher design considerations..?

I am considering designing/building my own Kickswitcher and will likely do doing a run of them (as with any run of pcbs, you need a decent ish number to make it economical)

Now, thinking of doing a one for single rom machines first.

Is there any design implications I need to consider? I.e fitting with other expansions? I see there are mostly 2 design styles... One is a cable running to a plug that sits in the Rom socket and the board can be positioned where you like and the other actually sits directly in the rom socket - adding height and width.

Any input would be appreciated before I start. Thanks amibay!

At least for a A500 Rev 5, anything other than a cable will conflict with an A500 clockport interface. I'm guessing that accelerators plugged into the 68000 socket will also get in the way unless a cable/socket switcher is used.

See, I knew amibay would come through. So that decision is made...

Now, length of the lead? Is there a preferred location to put it and therefore needs to be at least X long?

Could a detachable lead be used ?

My A600 can use the direct rom socket design.

10cm is ought to be enough to anyone. Some people will like it shorter, others might want a cable with more length.

8cm is ideal so it can be far enough from CPU socket and even be twisted to avoid touching an Agnus 2Mb card.

Of course some A500 internal accelerators will clash with it all the same.

Is there a need? Single ROM (16-bit Amiga's A500, A600 etc.) can take just a single 27C800 EPROM and a 3-pole switch toggling the extra address line between VDD and GND.

£3 for the eprom and £2 for the switch. No issues with height as it's a standard EPROM. No PCB. No Ribbon cables to get backwards.

Mine too, except i'm even tighter than you and use a cheaper spst switch to gnd having tied the high address line to vcc permanently via a 4k7 resistor :p

I could quite easily do the same. However, there are many people not skilled enough to do that. (and also dont want to cut holes in their case...!)

Judging by the amount of wanted posts - there is a need apparently.

And I use the same method as TC.

You could do switchless with 1 eprom too, might even release stuff to do that when I get around to it.

Eh? Fitting a kickstart switcher is surely more complicated than fitting a 27C800 + switch.

In Kipper2k's example he wires VDD and GND from strange places to keep his wires tidy. Mine just have the three wires on three pins of the EPROM.

You think soldering a switch, lifting legs, drilling a hole etc is easier than just plugging in the adapter into the rom socket?

Its trivial to the likes of me or you, but to people with 0 experience in soldering, cutting, drilling their machines- its a daunting task. Plug and play isnt.
