E.T for Atari 2600
quite honestly...as far as Atari 2600 games go it really isn't that bad, the version posted online with a few 'fixes' is a bit better... (though i doubt either will hold anyone's interest for that long, but few old Atari2600 games will...compared to the games of today)
the truth is it...and PacMan (the mazes and graphics over all were crap even for the A2600) did not live up to the hype nor the popularity of their 'franchises' at the time...
they are both, however...playable... (tho Ms PacMan for the 2600 blows the regular PacMan game out of the water)
crap 3rd party games flooding the market were far more responsible for the 'console' crash of the 80s (some people like to point at ET and PacMan for this...but 1 or 2 games alone weren't responsible)
i suspect that interest shifting over to computers like the C64, Ataris, Apples etc were partly responsible as well, as computers had come down in price considerably and by that time were only slightly more expensive than some consoles...and carried similar games..and of course could be programmed and used as educational and office tools...
(in 1983 the market was probably flooded with 7-8 consoles, and something like 20 computer systems...none of which were compatible with each other (save for a few things like different models of Apple or Atari (400/800)...the PET from Commodore, although discontinued in 1982 probably still had systems on the market (and possibly at 'blowout' prices) for instance...of course console 'compatible' computer systems like the ADAM being mostly junk probably didn;t help matters either, also the VIC20, TI99/4A and TS1000 systems were being dumped out at $99 by that point (if memory serves) )
(also i seem to recall an add-on promised by Mattel to turn the Intellivision into a fully functioning computer never really materialized either)
I got E.T just because of the hype around it recently with that landfill find. I've had it before but sold it. It's quite a weired game though
the thing i find funny about it all is now everyone is digging in their basements and attics because they think Atari games are worth a lot of money...
they went for what they went for because they came from what was largely thought of as a myth (the video game graveyard at Alamogordo)
a lot of people are going to be (are!) very disappointed :P
nearest i can find is that River Raid III is a taiwanese hack of Sub Scan
And the irony is that E.T. for the Atari 2600 was very far ahead of its time. Though lots of people who've never played it will point at it and claim it to be "The Worst Game Ever", it's actually quite a lot like modern titles... They don't seem to see it, though.
It's that time of year again - I picked up some new gaming-themed sweet tins.

Cherry flavour PSP Sours (I picked up the Blue Raspberry version, with the blue-hued "screen" on the tin, a while ago), strawberry flavour Space Invaders sweets, and Tetris mints.
The Tetris mints are adorable - they're mini-sized mints, in all of the different tetromino shapes.
It was ambitious for a 2600 game, I'll give it that - the problem was that the execution was terrible. Of course, that's about what you can expect when you try to have one guy develop an entire adventure game on one of the most bare-bones consoles ever in less than six weeks...
