I'm so jealous! I've wanted one of those since I was in elementary school! :) I hope you have many hours of fun with it!

For me, I recently picked up an Aoyue 474A+ Desoldering Station. It's a fairly inexpensive de-soldering station and it works quite well. The directions that come with it are horrid so I didn't have the best results with my first use, but I am now armed with more knowledge and am ready to use it again. This little device is going to make repairs so much easier!

I have one of those desolder stations and I have a few techniques that I am more than happy to share.

Important one
1. when turning the unit off

Hold the gun so that the nozzle is in directly up in the air - then turn the unit off, hold this position for about 30 seconds.

This is so that the solder doesn't solidify in the nozzle.


2. Thermal resist cloth

You can get this for next to nothing - I use this to clean the capture device WHILE the unit is on, you need to be VERY careful when doing this.

I do this because the the heavy gauge solder (in old components / power supplies) bonds to the spring coil of the gun - once this happens there's no more sucking, In fact, you need a chisel to get this stuff out.

3. Use in combination with Hot Air

On a lot of heavy through hole components with large ground planes this units maximum wattage is exceeded. so I combine this with no-clean-flux, a vice and hot-air of about 360c - this works wonders and really can get at those stubborn to remove stai... err solder welds. =D

Wow! Thanks for all the tips, Keith. :) I found out the hard way about the solder solidifying in the tube. :( I managed to get it cleaned out but it was not fun.

With the Thermal Resist Cloth, how do you use that while the unit is turned on? Unfortunately, I did not get a hot air rework station when I purchased my last soldering station. If I had know better at the time, I would definitely have spent the extra money on it.

Your keyboard is very very rare. It was supplied ONLY with rev 5 models (Fruhe Version) in Germany and those cases had the

Commodore logo engraved in the chassis and they all made in West Germany. All later A500's (rev6a + rev8a1 <-- the bad hybrid

ones) had green power led and orange floppy led. Very early (rev5 and later rev6a) models had red power led and green led for

floppy. A500+ never released with red-green led keyboard. If you open your Amiga you will see that the controller of the keyboard

says "MOS" and not Commodore like the others. These early keyboards DO NOT USE membrane. When you press the key two small

metals are kissing each other thus the machine receives command. This makes this keyboard cleaning proceedure very hard if you

want to remove the keys and clean it up. Later keyboard revisions have membranes. If you notice this keyboard you will see that

lacks the two A's buttons. Instead has a Commodore logo button (left) and a A button on the right. Rare keyboard. Do not sell it.

Yes, Seaside is right, but that keyboard was never used in A500 plus (they use mitsumi keyboards). In early days, C= used other manufacturers for keyboards - later all were made by mitsumi but there are also different ones. Some have a real PDV, others have a contact foil. Most have red-green leds but as somebody found out that there shouldn't be red LEDs (for ergonomic reasons), they changed it to green-orange on later models. :roll:

Nope, this keyboard is from a Rev 3, not a revision 5. Revision 5's are pretty common, some do still have a red power led, but lack the C= key.

You know...I made my A4000 an WHDLoad machine and sometimes regret it. As cool as it is I really miss the cracktos/trainers. I thought about getting one of these too so I am also interested in the review. I would also like to know if the load times are faster or the same approx.

it was the 1st proper computer I ever used, my school had one and me and and mates hogged it for a year about 1980-1981. I co-wrote a space invaders game (err, I called it Ace Invaders) in basic after I found how relatively quickly it could draw and modify strings instead of drawing individual ascii characters on screen (I pause a moment before calling it art or assets :) ) and I learnt a load from that.

Its bloody big though, gonna dominate the office, and have to do some fibbing to the wife how I got it as well. Maybe I can tell her its for the kids education. Yes that'll work :)

I've no CP/M or other disks yet, I've posted on the yahoo groups hopewfully some kind soul will help me out. Would love to find paper manuals but that might take another 30 years!

• How to use a PC PSU with the A2000
• How to use a PC keyboard (I was thinking of buying the AmigaOne keyboard)
• How to use a PC floppy or where to find one or two A2000 FDD
• Where to find or how to build longer FDD cable for the A2000

So, please, if any of you can tell me how to do those four things I would appreciate it.

they have replacement floppy drives that are just a smidge smaller than the A2000 drives (and white) but work perfectly.
They have and make all cables (st0ck floppy cables)

Oh man bought me cheap an xbox 1 with transparent black case because it looks cool.

Was it fun plugg it in? NO!

Big BOOM and smoke, then I saw it was a chinease model with 110V .SHOCKING. It's stupid to make such small stickers and the cable was the same as we use. Fired it up to 230 V. One time no look and BOOM :( Who thinks buying a xbox in pal region will have 110 volts :(

damn, that upset me because I wanted the great looking case :( So I just have that normal black one :(

But good it was no C= or anything else got damage, just xbox was smoking a bit here and there :whistle:

It's actually quite easy to swap cases on the Xbox 1. If you have experience in building PCs you should be comfortable enough to do it. It's easier than doing it to a 360 which is also not that hard.

I've just started work on the GBA1000 board that I got from ClusterUK, who got it from mmtremors.

Agnes fitted, damaged cap replaced, 680EC30 replaced with full fat 030, quick check and power up and... Works first time!

Things to do: fit missing components for flicker fixer (specifically the memory needed, which is coming from a dead 3000 motherboard), fit part for the IDE interface, get a load of switches for the various unlabelled jumpers :D , and make an 8-pin DIN to VGA cable

Very, very, very cool bit of hardware.

And then work out how to get the Picasso II into the machine!

Only took 2 years and 3 months to arrive.

i warn you it works but the case is totally knackered due to my clumsy mod to get air round the HD I added - it ran hot so I cut a whopping big triangle out of the case.

I just got this on evilbay:

• Dataflyer Plus SCSI + IDE Card
• A2088 Bridgeboard
• A2090 Hard drive controller
• Microbotics HardFrame SCSI controller (no hard drive included)
• A2058 8mb ram card with 2mb installed

There is also a defect Microbotics 8 Up! 8mb ram card with 2mb installed (displays red boot error screen) include in the deal.

Red boot is bad ram I think?

With this and the A2000 mobo that I got earlier I'm almost ready for my Franken2k project.

I'm planning to build a plexiglass case for it with a custom paint job. I'll post pics when I have all the parts.

Red screen is defective board (the screen namely points the defective board).

Or a pure red screen (nothing more showing) means bad ROM.

It's a DIP card with 2meg on it.

I'll check first if it isn't just a lost or misplace jumper config. But if I can't make it work I'll pass it to you. I won an A2058 memory board with 2mb on it (max. 8 ) in the same deal so I can make do for my project.

I also have an extra A1000 in the mail. This one I got from the University of Victoria in British Columbia, Canada. Don't know yet what I'm going to do with this one since I already have 2 of those.

LOL I found the problem with the 8Up! card.
About half of the memory chip are missing on it, hence the red screen...

Half the chip are missing in bank A1 and half+1 chip is missing in bank A2.

I guess once I install the chip correctly and in the right amount the board will work.
