Maybe that's something worn-out potentiometers do? I have a monitor where the volume knob displays the same behavior...

So it does indeed :)
But I'm still stuck with 2GB cause the new RAM won't work. Apparently, my mainboard accepts a max of 4x1GB, but only when the modules are single sided, and these things appear to be double sided. So these new modules may go straight back to the shop, and I'm on the hunt again for either 4x1GB single sided, or (much easier) 2x2GB.
Why can't memory just be memory, stupid pc hardware designers....
McVenco:
welcome to the world of win7, if u use the 32bit version 4gig is the max addressable so like has been said if you got a 1GB GFX card u will have just under 3GB for windows and lose the duel channel of the second pair of ram chips I think, can someone plz confirm. I run with a 4GB swap file or there a bouts and have only come close to useing all available mem once when running windows ErrorChecking on a big drive. I personaly think 2GB of memory with a resonable fast CPU is good enough for most day today activerties I certainly would`t want any less
Might start a thread on the 64Bit ver of win 7 as never really used it, hint hint someone do a review
Hell_Labs:
Nice retro TV
Might want get some contact fluid for them controls, comes in a can and can be fun to spray around has be roumerd to give u contacts hehehehehe.
Now be absulatly sure what u are doing befor u go messing in the back of the thing, I know there are a few old TV repair guys on amybay and a couple on EAB, I don`t go any where else
Dual-channel is dependent on the motherboard, I think. I've had at least one system report dual-channel enabled with 4GB RAM and a 512MB card.
Arrived today my Lantronix UDS200. It is a lovely device that emulates a serial modem directly to LAN, so you can hook two (or just one) computer to a network or router and PRESTO! instant internet access. :)
My motherboard (Gigabyte EP31-DS3L) uses dual channel, but when using all 4 memory slots it's limited to single sided memory modules. I'll just return the modules and get a set of 2x2GB, and ditch the old 2x1 that is now on the motherboard.
Since I'm installing Win7-64bit I shouldn't have any trouble with a combination of RAM and a 1GB gfx card. Or at least I hope so...
yep thats the point of 64bit
Hell_Labs, starting like your m8 heheheh, pics plz
You wont use up a 64 bit's memory address allocation.
So dont worry about that lol..
having said that im sure they said the same when we went to 32bit os's
But this time im sure its true lol..
i know for a fact the address allocation on 64bit is HUGE even compared to 32bit.
Its not something to worry about..
But windows 7 x64 dosent like to display 32bit apps in full screen for me.
gets all garbled black screen with white lines..
Havent been botherd to figure out why yet. maybe i should google and see if any 1 els has teh same issue or if M$ released a fix.
if not il take my ass back to xp.
i dont like how windows 7 wont let me set it to look like windows 98 any way.
@Hell_Labs
as for interfearance when twisting a knob..
on amps we used to spray the pot with anti static spray and that usualy fixed it. to my knowlage its just a bunch of static.
How graphics cards and other devices affect memory limits
Devices have to map their memory below 4 GB for compatibility with non-PAE-aware Windows releases. Therefore, if the system has 4GB of RAM, some of it is either disabled or is remapped above 4GB by the BIOS. If the memory is remapped, X64 Windows can use this memory. X86 client versions of Windows don’t support physical memory above the 4GB mark, so they can’t access these remapped regions. Any X64 Windows or X86 Server release can.
Ite the address range of a 32bit windows os..
like
0x00000000000
there are only so many of them and everything uses one.
theres exactly enough to do 3.9999999999999GB
(1bit less than true 4GB)
and its not just ram and Gpu that has memory that uses up the address range.
also a 32bit Windows application wont use more than 2gb of ram unless you edit the boot ini file,
i forget what the switch is now but i think its " /3gb "
that will tell applications that they can use up to 3gb.
x64 os's have a Much much MUCH larger address range.
and i dont think you will ever really be able to max it out.
Well I never knew it included GPU ram on 32bit, learn something new each day. Cheers guys
Not only ya GPU but ya sound card and anything else that needs memory, basicaly thers only 4Gig on a 32Bit OS and every thing has to fit in it
humm might do some research on that boot.ini file and the 3G thingy
thanks ShambleS me to learned something as well :)
EDIT:
after a little reading and not very much understanding it seems EasyBCD is an easy way to much around with this on win7 OS`s http://neosmart.net/EasyBCD/
took me a while but found out I had to do some reading again
The BCD store is typically located at the \BOOT\BCD location on the boot partition. This partition may be hidden if it was automatically created during Windows 7 installation. If that's the case, you'll need to first manually assign it a drive letter from Computer Management | Disk Management (Control Panel | Administrative Tools | Computer Management | Disk Management) before being able to open it in EasyBCD
right thats enough OT stuff from me
Received my brand new PSP 3000 Lilac Hannah Montana Bundle today.
Well i know what you're thinking, 27 year old adult with a Lilac Hannah Montana PSP?!
Well in my defense for the price of a used one i got a brand spanking new one, direct from Sony with a 1 year warranty.
Arrived at 8am this morning, hacked by 9am (usually quicker but no files to hand), playing Sega Games by 9:15am lol

Some Pics
Yeah what is a 27 year old male doing with a Hannah Montana PSP
You should have kept this one to yourself m8 :p
I drove almost 400 miles (round trip) yesterday to pick this little thing up :)
Its got:
SAM440 Flex 733Mhz
1GB RAM
Radeon 9200 graphics (128MB RAM)
500GB Hard drive
SATA DVDRW
Amiga OS4.1 (update1 built into the CD, Update 2 installed, doing the others later).
The case is a bit weird, I cant figure out how to mount the optical drive and the PSU gets really really hot. I think its supposed to have a fan but I didnt get one. Im going to hunt for a 8CM fan and attach it or get a new PSU. Also, the i/o plate doesnt sit flush like a PC i/o plate does
EDIT: Ill be doing a first impressions thread and probably a follow on review at some point too :)
When you did that 400 miles round trip m8 you forgot to drop it of at my house
Very nice chap, hope you enjoy it.
 The guy I met (who I recommended Amibay to of course :) ) was a really nice chap, he didnt want to post it so I drove down to Cheltenham to pick it up, its been a looooong wait for it to become available I can tell ya! OS4.1 is just brilliant too :)
Im going to get RunInUAE and a few other bits setup on it, cant wait!
Just in, an Adaptec controller, 2 Quantum harddrives 18,2GB and the other should be around 30.
But the thing that mattered most, the cable, as you can see 68 pins, so for the Cyberstorm MKIII in the A3000T.

Also I think this thread has earned it's marks for a sticky.
I find it more strange why there aren´t any more thread in the "Legendary Threads" subforum. I've seen quite some epic topics here in the past...
I agree with Justin
Its always at the top anyway.

I also recived some ide hard disks.

I downloaded a 'try-before-you-buy' version of OS Lion from the usual t0rr3nt suspects and found out the hard way that my new machine will not tolerate such malpractice :lol:

Got my new 5.25 floppy disks in the mail today!
Not that exciting to most of you, but I am just learning BASIC for the first time, so it was incredibly fun! I copied my test/demo disk to a new disk just to firgure out how it all works and since the disks were sealed when they arrived, I felt like I was back in the mid 80's! (Not that I was around then...:p)
Picked up a C64 recently:

Found this A1200 on Gumtree in Bristol for free :D Phoned up an old IRC friend who went and picked it up for me, perfect working order, a little yellow and surprisingly it still had its warranty seal :D
