news caps on A1200 1D1 board.
i had been asked at the Amiga meet to recap an A1200 for mr Sardine. so today i have finally got around to it -sorry it took sooo long.
Anyway the caps were leaking badly in a couple of places and they all needed changing. After about 40 mins work the board was stripped and cleaned with ipa and a toothbrush, refluxed, fresh solder and new caps on. (thanks ADAM)
but..
it had strange sound issues , booming and interference an the Audio. So what to do? the owner said it was ok before and had no issues. So on examination around Paula i could see some residue from the leaking caps that i had misses. hey I'm old!
So, a good clean with IPA and retest.. just the same? So a quick go over Paula and all the near by SMD bits and bobs with the solder iron. and .. bingo crisp clear and happy sound.
So some testing after a rebuild in the case. Doom was used to test sound / speed and function of graphics etc..
well, doom runs very choppy and it seems the Apollo libs were not installed. that done a quick reboot and now doom flies along. music was disabled on this run as it was only a speed test.
a few other games are tested to see it all is good and , alien breed 3d runs fine as do one or two others.
It took much longer than it usually does and consumed most of sat morning. usually a recap takes about an hour all in but its nice to see a board running well.
Demo time.
i plugged in my CF card in to the PCMCIA port and ran the first demo i found and let it run for the 3 mins or so it takes. the sound is loud and crisp and no undue sounds , speed is good and everything looks good.
back to doom,
enabled , cpu=68040, sound on, music on, mmu=on and give it a run. it plays fast and runs very well with the music booming out.
The last problem.
OS 3.9 doesn't seem to boot every time , it stops at the 3.1 or 3.9 logo (insert disk) and goes no further on one or two occasions it forgot the HDD altogether. although it seems fine now and reboots just fine to workbench. a couple of times it waits at the 3.9 boot screen but rebooting again loads workbench.
some investigation required but over all , looking good.
mike.
