Amiga 4000 T with at least 68040 for a Fat PS3 with 15 Games

If anyone is interested in swapping a barely used, factory refurbished Fat PS3 (got it from Sony last december as my old one died) against an Amiga 4000T in good condition. The Fat PS3 is able to play PS1, PS2 and of course PS3 Games, has 4 USB ports and Memory card, CF and CD Reader integrated, and was upgraded to a 500 GB HD. I am also willing to chip in up to 15 Games from my collection depending on how the Amiga is equipped, as well as some Move and PS3 Controllers and a PS3 Cam.

It is a well taken care PS3 so I hope to get an Amiga 4000T in good condition for it. If someone from California, Washington or Oregon would like to do this, I am willing to drive a couple of miles :)

I might be interested/have a swappable machine. I have an old A4000T w/68040 that I haven't been 100% if I want to keep or not. I've been only recently using it to test parts to sell. What Buster version does it have ? It seems a 4000D conversion to a Tower, with a nonstandard daughterboard right?

I was looking for a 4000T (the original one from ESCOM or AT) but maybe this one will work ?

Yup, that's an A4000 desktop board in an aftermarket tower conversion case. I have a similar arrangement for my A4000 tower. Not as 'genuine' as an official A4000T, but arguably just as capable machines.

I'll try to field more of these questions tonight. I've honestly no idea of HD size but it seems even after I took out the Flyer drives it still has 4. The CD ROM I'll have to play with or replace. I believe the eject mechanism broke.

Also I have a 64mb SIMM to put in there.

Is there a way to check Buster version through the software or do I just have to get access to the chip?

Looks like its leaked a bit onto the board :/

You should really clip that battery out immediately, before it gets worse, then clean the board with lemon juice to stop the acid from spreading - even if it doesn't look like it's gotten onto the board.

Yeah I will be doing that soon. I just did it with my A4000D last week per this thread. Luckily with the A4000T the leakage went mostly to the bottom of the case - it has a small spattering of rusty spots which I'll see about cleaning up as well.

The Floppy Drive installed is the Chinon FB-357A which is HD (at least that's what I read). Once I get it back together I can test it if I happen to have an HD-Floppies laying about.

I am having fun with an A2000 with a data flyer (IDE only) and trying to get the CDROM recognised..... :help: what a pain it has been so far... the Hard disk is fine, master, the CDrom set as slave... when I use AMICDFS 3.5 the only thing recognised is the HD...:nuts:

Speaking of CD-ROM drives, I wonder if I could toss an IDE drive in there. The one that was in there was the only SCSI drive left after I took the Flyer out. Are there compatibility issues with IDE or do most work using AsimCDFS or whatnot?

I still need to get the battery out. I ended up spending a huge chunk of my time beating Diablo 2 for the first time this weekend. O.o

Nope, I bought 3 but hadn't beaten 2 yet. I hadn't even passed act 1 despite owning the game since it came out.

Gonna tackle this battery removal tomorrow (Tuesday). Then I may as well reassemble things to give it a stability test. Not sure I'd trust myself to replace the battery. Hell I'm not sure I trust myself to remember where all the screws go :D. Will post pics as soon as I get things going.

Futzing with RAM and putting it back together

Progress Report:
It's been running straight minus a few resets for 3ish hours. It doesn't recognize the 64mb SIMM (only takes up to 32 per slot supposedly) but still says there's 32mb of Fast Ram. There was a Guru error in the beginning when I was futzing with the Floppy Drive and it only recognized 16mb of fast until I turned it off/on. I found the Floppy Drive installed didn't work so I had to (precariously) put the floppy drive from my desktop in there to test some software.

Nice. About the ram: there is a limit of 16 mb for ram on the motherboard, so I am a little confused how you got to 32... does the mouse and keyboard work 100%? there is some battery leak material on the pins of the closest ic to the battery, could you do a close up of that area? And the cdrom works, it seems the floppy too or is this another floppy you tried?

Might it be the http://amiga.resource.cx/exp/warpengine that is installed that supplies the extra memory?

Yes, it's the Warp Engine (takes up to 4 32mb simms). I put all the Warp Engine RAM onto the Motherboard, then put the 64mb simm (in hopes that maybe it would recognize it) into the warp engine. Will have to rearrange again. When I do I'll take a closeup pic of the battery area.

Actually the CD-ROM isn't even installed at the moment. The tray mechanism isn't working. I have another to try later.

Also I forgot to mention I'd forgotten to plug in the SCSI drive until late in the night, and when I did the floppy drive seemed to be erratic. It still worked, just not in WB (showed "DF0:???", "PC0:???" with no floppy inserted). It would still boot from floppy and recognize floppies in WB if they were left in the drive. Could it be the scsi termination/lack thereof could mess with the floppy functionality?

The mouse and keyboard work, but they're the ones I use on my CD32. I do have others so hopefully they all work too. The joystick port works also (struggled to find an AGA game to test it with tho, the A4000 seems to hate even A1200 games!).

So in summary so far:
Battery: Removed
Mouse Port: Functioning

RAM: Needs Rearranging, But Functioning

IDE: Functioning
CD-ROM: Currently Broken/Uninstalled

Daughterboard: Functioning (when last tested, no cards currently)
Audio: Functioning? (was getting one channel and had to jiggle a cord)

Let me know if I'm forgetting/need to look at anything else. This project is frying my brain a bit!

Maybe the signal that recognizes a disk being inserted/changed .. might be a pc floppy drive? I'm sure someone else here knows what is causing that :thumbsup:

Think there is a command you can type to do it manually ... course that's not really the desired method :)

It was working fine though, until I plugged the SCSI in. Went through the full install of Star Trek 25th Anniversary (8 Disks).

Since I tried two drives, the "original" and the one from my A4000D (both Chinon FB-357A), one worked when SCSI wasn't plugged in and the original did not, so I wonder if the reverse is true.

Seems I may have loosened a floppies cord. It works fine again. Now the only thing remaining before I take it apart to redo the RAM. How in the world do I get it to recognize the CD-ROM drive? I got as far as setting drive IDs and now I get a "CD0:NDOS" icon. This is an old 2X SCSI drive, not the one I had in there before (that I never properly setup either).

So you use the SCSI Controller from the CPU board. dont remember what the device is called, warpscsi.device ? you can check with sysinfo, go on scsi and see what shows up, there you will also see what device number your cdrom has. you will then need to go to a file called cd0 in devs/drivers and change the device to whatever name the scsi.device has and correct the id number (usually a value between 0 and 6, but would set it higher if you know how to change the jumpers on the scsi drive, otherwise just go with the number you saw on sysinfo/scsi tab. hope that helps :) i have 30 fun hours of work ahead.... loving it:huh: be back tomorrow afternoon or so if I wake up...

I got the CD-ROM working! w00t!

Ended up installing AsimCDFS, which was on there already but configured for something else, and it got things working just dandy. Otherwise when I was screwing with the CD0 file I think I was doing more harm than good. Adding the proper device name and ID made the drive disappear entirely! o.O Guessing because a bunch of other gobbledygook was in the file as well and I'd no clue what to set any of it to.

Also I did get it to format a HD-Floppy (and it was doing a better job than the PC in doing so) that I used to transfer SYSInfo etc.

I Always Wanted to try Quake on a 4000. It runs for crap on my CD32 with 030/50. Still not exactly good on an 040, but much much better (once I got it working).

The audio jacks are definately wonky. I think just the left channel. It kinda looks like the previous owner may have bent them closer to alleviate the issue as the cord I'm using fits so snuggly that once both channels are plugged in there's no cutting out. I could try soldering them but not sure I'd trust myself.

TFX is giving me grief. Nemac IV runs pretty well, as as does Trapped. I realized I have many things to try. Still have Trapped II, Foundation, Breathless, etc etc.

The CD-ROM seems to make floppy-like noises when changing tracks. Not sure if that's normal.

Now the "Flyer:" drive is being wonky. Says it's unvalidated. Going to attempt to run some recovery. I bet TFX or something else I was playing with is to blame as there were lots of crashes.

"Flyer:" works again. Seems touchy if things you install or run crash while it's doing something.

I played with a multimeter on the audio jacks and didn't find anything wrong. Tho I'm no expert with using that thing (my first one bought last weekend, lol). They just seem touchy as well.

Did you want me to toss in anything that's unsold from this thread? (am I allowed to do that?) I haven't had a nibble in months so I don't think they're going anywhere. ImageFX is actually installed on this 4000 anyways.

I got a multimeter last week, needed it to check traces on the A2500, which has been resurrected ! ALL the CPU pins were green, as well as the Kickrom socket.... thanks to a friend with great soldering skills the Amiga is up and running again :D

I'm not sure if the zip drive works. When trying to access it via the warp engine's special HDToolBox it sit and clicks every few seconds until you reset the Amiga. This has been in my mom's garage for who knows how long.

The 3 cards I pulled out still work tho (per the boot menu and the system info thingy)!

That's the "click of death". The unit was used with a bugged disk and that disk dislodged the read/write heads.

Never heard a way to fix this problem.

Thats unfortunate with the zip... do you have other zip disks you could try? Are the three cards the same you had on the screenshots?

Per some scouring of the interwebs, the click of death is still incurable, short of going in and bending the heads back into place, which isn't even guaranteed to work. It's 100% a drive problem so using another disk won't change anything. I actually used a brand new disk that was still in the plastic.

The cards are the three pictured, yes. Video Toaster 4000, Vlab/Motion, and DPS Personal Animation Recorder. (I should go update that thread.) Will mess with them on the software side tonight if possible. The toaster software is already installed but complains about a genlock not being there. Presuming since it was used as a Toaster/Flyer that the Flyer side of things needs to be uninstalled before it will work, but not sure.

Google for "Trouble In Paradise". It is a windows-only program that check the healthiness of ZIP disks and correct working disks to avoid the problem.

Notice the program will refuse to run after January of 2010 and a newer version never saw the light of day. No biggie, just set the windows calendar to 2009 and use it.

I might be able to get another Zip drive to try from a coworker. She said she just came across it two weeks ago and was thinking of throwing it out. Here's hoping it's scsi! :D

Sadly I have no such scsi options on any of my PCs. I can, however, check the disks using my mom's parallel zip drive. If I get another and it works, I'll try that "Trouble In Paradise" on her PC before sending the disks along.

all right. its a nice way to transfer data. How did you connect your amiga to the TFT ?

Just using the RCA jacks. I have an A520 adapter plugged in the back for testing purposes. Oddly enough this tv (it's what I use for my karaoke shows) displays PAL signals just fine via the composite input, albeit cut off on the bottom. I'd also used it previously on my TIMM monitor when I first played with it.

Didn't get to do much tonight as we had an automotive emergency that took up most of the night.

Played with the Toaster 4.2 Software a teensy bit. It seems the natural icon for 4.2 has the Flyer logo. It makes me wonder if I need to use 4.0 or 4.1? Regardless I've no idea what I'm doing. :D

Didn't get a chance to do much last night. Spent most of the time rummaging through my mom's house where I found a few random Amiga hardware bits. Among which was a DataFlyerRam expansion board w/2mb(?) in original box (which says for A2000 or A500??). Don't know if you'd want it for the A2000 you said you were playing with. It's been in my mom's garage for who knows how long but it looks in decent shape.

I ordered a CF to IDE Adaptor for it and hope it will run with the IDE controller it came with. I have seen an external Zip/USB, which could come in handy in case you find an internal SCSI one for the 4000 ?

Have you heard of USB to SCSI converters and whether they are good anything ? If so I could just use one external device :D

I could add some software into the deal. What sort are you into? I saw a few boxes in my mom's garage that might include more 3d rendering stuff (found out recently that Lightwave is part of the Toaster Software Package regardless) and (I think) Deluxe Paint IV. I also have many games, most of which I'm very protective of, but some extras from a local computer user group. Mostly wargames and simulations (Perfect General, Their Finest Hour, etc) that have original boxes and everything. Most of the games have been stored in the house, but sadly the productivity/3d stuff has been stored in the garage.

Unsure of USB to SCSI options.
