Advantages of PPC

Hi!
I bought an amiga 4000, that has a mediator with radeon 9250 with 256mb of ram, csppc with 060 at 66mhz and a ppc at 363Mhz 128mb 72GB UWSCSI, soundblaster, usb card ,lan etc.
What is the advantage of having all this with the current software that exists?
What advantages could give me a csppc over a csmk2?
Scsi is faster, but what's the point? I don't need that speed for what I have.
I run OS3.9, what advantages 4.1 brings me now?
What does exist that runs on ppc natively that is worth using these days?
Sorry for ask all this , but I am a newbie in this and now that I have all this "power" can't find anything that justifies having it.

That's quite a setup for a newbie to get involved with without having any idea what to do with it.
How did you go about chosing it, what did you expect to get from it?

I know the feeling, i almost never used the ppc part of my CSPPC card.

The advantage you get is if you play games like Quake or other 3D games.
You can play MP3 without any problem thru amiamp. :P

Thats all i can think of atm.

Personaly i dont see any advantage in OS4.1 but it can be fun to mess around with and you sure got a nice machine for the job.

The SCSI is indeed faster and the point is? Well you can transfer files faster i gues, so you dont have to look at a slow full hd copy.

Edit: I rly cant point you in any direction just becouse i where in the same position you are in atm, but tell us, what do you want to do with the system? What do you find fun?

The only real advantage (if you can call it that) is you have the ultimate pimped out A4000 (well only a GREX PCI is faster but that's ultra rare & besides not supported in OS4.1 Classic)

So this is all for bragging rights to have the ultimate Classic Amiga, in real life a £20 PC from 2004 can wipe the floor with it :lol:

If you want OS4.1 then a Sam or AmigaOne would be a better option and a fraction of the price of your current hardware.

For OS3.9 the main benefits are WarpDT (for loading picture datatypes with PPC) This really speeds up Internet browsing for example.

WarpOS so you can run WOS ports of Classic Games like Doom/Quake/QuakeII/Wipeout2097. There are also some emulators that use WOS and other apps like AmigaAmp.

An 060 based Amiga is still pretty awesome, you can run the OS nice and fast you just don't get the above few extra's.

Plus if the CSPPC dies you have an expensive paperweight like I found, and with the 060 overclocked to 66mhz this could be very soon unless you still have the bus speed/SCSI at 50mhz or extreme cooling on the CPLD which already gets very hot at normal speeds!

Here is the guy, forgot to mention that board is a Rev D Cr, I will try to get a scandoubler and an auto monitor switch to finish this, play a bit and sell.

You have really nice and CLEAN!!! setup.
Looks like someone put a lot of efforts (and money) into this machine. Only experienced CSPPC users know that CSPPC needs good cooling to serve long without problems (was your CSPPC cooled like this all the time Steve?). Not to mention about nice wire dressing everywhere.

For what I'm using PPC:

1) DEMOSCENE!!! Not too much comparing to ECS or AGA demos, but still nice to watch.

2) WarpDT - they are really fast

3) mp3 - sure, there are $1 players, but doing this on Amiga is something special.

Yes - you can have all this and more on $20 PC, but I like to know that the picture and sound I receive is produced by 20 years old REAL hardware.

And this is the reason why all kind of emulators are like virtual sex for me - you can have it quick, fast and cheap without hassle whenever you want, but it's not the same like REAL sex with woman you love. For me at least. :-)

Your hand is here also, all cplds have heatsinks, this is a dual fan, and the test I made the other day proves that this thing can run for hours.
Went away for 5 hours or so (left the machine on) and came home.
cd and drive were in the normal position, box closed.
The box was just a bit hot when I returned, but it was because of scsi HD.
Removed the cd drive and floppy part and I can say that I could put my fingers confortably on top of dissipators with no stress, they were only warm.

Hello,

there is a lot of programs (commercial and not) for the PPC, released in Germany in the past, like "Ultraconv", "WildfirePPC", "Fantasticdream", then the Mac emulator "FusionPPC", and two OSs: OS4 and MorphOS, with 68k emulation that speed up some old programs (you can test this by yourself).
Then the 64bit ram access and the UWSCSI controller that increase the performance of all the 68k applications.
