SCSI Reader

You have 5 slots in that SCSI unit. Can you use all 5 slots at the same time?

Can you copy data between any slot while all slot has a media?


If PCMCIA card shows up as LUN 1 I think this is ok. You may have jumpers inside the unit to change some of the unit parameters/configuration.

The unit I have here as I said before has at least 7 jumpers inside. One jumper configs split the PCMCIA port or gives it two SCSI id. What the other 6 jumpers do I will have to look into this but I do know it has nothings to do with the SCSI id.

I have just found out my unit does DMA.

Hi mate,

You can use all slots at the same time, without problems as each slot have a different LUN.

The reader have jumpers to configure the SCSI ID from 0 to 6 and another one for chain Termination

The PCMCIA slot is LUN0 and I use it to patition/format the CF's, after that I use the CF's in the CF slot (LUN1). System boots/works :thumbsup:

To setup cards you can use GVP Faaastprep or HDInsTool.

An example of use: You can use one CF with Amiga partitions and the SD slot with one card FAT32 formatted and copy files between Amiga partitions & FAT32 (you must use Fat95)

Ok got it. My unit is not as fast,just found the docs but it does have a few special features so I will keep my unit.

The most useful media I think for most user(s) will be compact flash. This is what I use all the time as standard on my OS set-up. I use 1Mb microdrive as back-up along with old micro flash cards 512mb-1Gb so in other words I use all old flash cards from other devices that is no longer used as back-up.

We are now just awaiting a few users to update the A1200 kickstart rom so that we can boot from most flash cards thats inserted into the A1200 PCMCIA slot.

The ability to boot OS3.1 from the PCMCIA slot with no hardrive/floppy needed would be awesome. It maybe possible to add new features in the menu when holding down both mouse button during start-up.

The SCSI card reader from Mechware is also not as fast as an ACard with an IDE2CF, or real IDE HD.
In fact I don't think I ever achieved more than 3MB/s with this SCSI card reader.

You can't expect same speccs with something double the price but it's really nice and very convenient having the ability to use almost every card available as an HD without the need to buy seperate SCSI2IDE bridges :)

In my opinion these readers are good devices for basic Amiga setups, like A500 or A500+, for other Amigas you can find more reliable solutions (like IDE or USB card readers).

I use the SCSI reader when I do big downloads from a PC onto a SD or micro SD card then transfer the file to amiga via the SCSI device.

NOTE I can also do this on my smartphone,download big files to micro SD inside the smartphone then just pop the card into the SCSI reader.

Also note A1200 PCMCIA port did not see 32Gb micro SD card,but I am still using old drivers so perhaps it may now work as there are new drivers on the aminet which I need to install.

Does this unit work with higher capacity drive? 4Gb max here.

what filesystem are you using.

I am using fat95,but I did say I need to update my files,perhaps this is my problem but the PDF manual does say 4Gb max but this was in the year around 1995.

So why did the user here update the firmware was there a problem with the unit when bought?

The limit with GVP A500-HD8+ v4.15 is 4GB per drive. In my case I use:

- CF 4GB: 3 partitions, 500M, 1GB, 2.5GB.

- SD 4GB, one partition of 4GB under KS 1.3, old FFS and without any special device or library, just using the Faaastprep tool. (Not too bad, right? :lol:)

So, now I use the CF to boot/work and the SD to transfer files between other Amigas & PC (WinUAE).

Thought I'd revive this old thread, I finally got one of these SCSI Card readers today and whilst the speed isn't overwhelming as discovered in this thread it's still an truly awesome bit of kit.

I've just set one up on my A1200 (via Blizzard 1230 SCSI Kit) in place of the dead floppy drive and so far I'm extremely impressed.

Once I plugged my IDE back in there was no longer any boot delay, that seems to go for normal CF slot as well as PCMCIA-CF. I just experimented with a spare 16mb SD card I have here, using HDToolBox I was able to prep it easily, I can see me using this to prepare new CF's in future before going to WinUAE for the install as it's dead simple.

The 133x CF I'm using is giving 2.5mb/sec and this seems normal as per the thread here, the old 16mb SD card is actually faster then expected, 2.2mb/sec!

So I may be a little late to the party but wanted to give my opinion on this fine device.

Yes, I agree with you my friend, these devices are little gems. Very versatile and are able to operate with multiple disks at once (PCMCIA, CF, SD, ....).

They are not very fast but are very stable.

Do you remember my comment on post #57? Well, time ago I decided to test one of these readers on my A1200T/BPPC and now is installed as permanent device :lol:

We sure do get caught up in the pursuit of speed but for the most part even Motherboard IDE speed is fast enough!

I'm very pleased overall with the solution, it's perfect for my needs right now on the Amiga, versatility is more important than outright speed.

I've been there & done that with the Warp3D's and PPC's, now I'm using my Amiga's properly :lol:
