68882 and 68060

Hi guys,

I have a contact with some stock here in the US of genuine FULL 68060RC50(A) and 68882 FPUs of various MHZ.

To keep the price down I need to have a decent quantity purchase.

I know my Motorola stock, and these are the real deal. No Chinese knock-offs. These would be NEW or socket pulls.

Please reply if you want to buy a 68060. These chips are FULL (FPU/MMU/CPU) and can be overclocked reliably to 66MHz (Like for Atari Falcon boards) and higher. Depends on the chip, but over 70MHz is possible. 66MHz is virtually guaranteed. With the A suffix chip, one can overclock even higher. I've seen these chips perform with proper heat sink (I know the best way to cool them, and I'd include that) up to 100MHz, depending on the rev.

I'm trying to assess interest, because if we band together, I can make a quantity grab while they're available and get them pretty inexpensively.

If you want one, please clearly state what your requirements are. Standard requirements are for the equivalent of XC68060RC50. These ARE genuine, I just need to know if we, as a community can buy a small quantity of these, and maybe some other MOT/FreeScale stuff while the gettings good. These opportunities don't come around too often. We're talking about keeping the price point down, but we can only pull it off in numbers. Not huge numbers, but more than ten, let's say. It's pretty time sensitive, these will move, I'm kinda calling in a favor, so if you're in the market and want a good price, post to this thread ;)!.

If there's enough interest, we can grab these while they're available, as a community. Worst case scenario, if you're not sure, you can probably eBay these for three times the cost.

Probably a good idea to list quantities you'd want and a target price. I was hoping to get 25-50 units of 68060. This isn't enough to move mountains on the price side, but it will assure a decent batch I've located from a single seller that I know who is generally reliable and much more consistent than some of the markets out there. I can't pin down the price, but it's probably going to be $50-$60 (I've sold some of my mine for $59 in the forums), though I will do my best. I will update as I work on the price, but as I believe The Doors said, "They've got the CPUs, we've got the numbers", so we'll need to have enough interest.

To the gentleman who contacted me via PM... I'm not going to upset any markets here. Or set any precedents. This is a more of a personal contact than a broker.

68882 is a bit more complicated. There are less of these floating around in good condition, I think, and the price seems to vary. But... I think my contact may be sitting on a few of these, or know someone who is, so just because I've been asked a couple of times here or in a PM, I figured we could persuade a throw-in of a few of these at a reasonable price.

So probably best to say how many you're down for if we can pull this off, and if you have a floor/ceiling price, list it. I promise to do my best. I'd like a few myself, looking on eBay horrified me, but also reminded me that it's a sound investment. I figure if I can't do this for what I've sold some personal inventory recently ($59) it's not worth doing. The more people/units we have the lower the price.

If I can put together "pre-orders" for quantity 12 - 68060 (XC, 01F43G mask), I can get them today at the price I've been selling them ($59).

That's a realistic target perhaps. If we can exceed that target qty, there's room on the price.

I don't think my contact has MC revs, but I understand the request.

As for as XC's go, for those who don't know, Motorola didn't go "MC" with the full 060 in the 90s era of Phase5, ACT, or GVP(-m) boards. So these boards would generally have an XC processor (and were designed around this mask). Some boards shipped with 040/060 options, so obviously, those people who are looking to upgrade or have a board without CPU would be [I assume] the people I'm trying to find parts for.

It seems like there isn't enough demand to justify what I was proposing. Was contacted by a couple of suppliers yesterday regarding 68882 chips.

Couple of questions about the parts required here, I have more expertise dealing with the 68060 variety ;).

1) Do you want the PGA version (meant for a socket), often pictured as a square chip with gold square in the center.

2) Does anybody know if XILINX manufactured parts are good? I don't know if they're officially authorized to produce these, but I found some that were manufactured in 2012 by XILINX, and didn't know if it was like a FreeScale situation.

3) I have been assuming, perhaps stupidly so, but I assumed the A suffix parts were like 68060 parts and can be used. I.e. XC68882RC50A. Is this true?

I've got two potential suppliers. One has Motorola manufactured chips, the other Xilinx. I've been talking in terms of quantity 10, and I would distribute out to you guys. I'm working on the price, but don't have too much time. I've gotten some PMs from folks, but I'm hoping you're subscribed to the thread. If so, please [re]state your interest, new interest welcomed. You're not committing to anything, but if you intend to buy, list your ceiling price and quantity desired. Also, if you *won't* take a xilinx product, state that as well. They were partners with Motorola, and I tend to think their sites may have been used to manufacture these under MOT branding, correct me if I'm wrong on this. I promise to keep the price as low as possible to make this happen. This all pretty urgent. I don't know how long I can keep these suppliers on the line. Some inventory must have been freed by an OEM. Oh, by the way, we're talking about NEW parts.

In order to make this work at an effective price point, I would have to purchase around 10 pieces. I can get genuine Motorola, or genuine Xilinx parts, either way the condition should be new and the price should be low.

Are you only interested in MC (now manufactured by FreeScale, final revision) processors? MC/rev 6 CPUs are only available in 71E41J mask, and supply is harder on these (for me, at least).

If you are flexible on the revision, I can probably supply them at a reasonable price. Either way, please let me know, and if you have a "ceiling price", especially for MC-only interest, please let me know...

Yes, I only deal with genuine Motorola parts, and I know 68060s very well, and my contacts are generally sitting on new old stock (NOS) and are within the USA, though regardless, I know how to tell the difference.

So, it seems that there is definite interest in 7 pieces of new 68060 CPUs, Motorola XC parts.

Also, there are two additional requests for 68060s, but I need to know if these are only for FreeScale or MC parts or if XC parts would be acceptable.

I have a contact that has genuine Motorola, brand new, old stock 68060 @ 50MHz CPUs (full versions, CPU, MMU, and FPU). They're sealed in ISO-compliant trays of 10, and probably have been so since the late 90's, but I need to pick up at least 10 (a full tray) for him to be willing to help me out. I can keep the price reasonable. As I've said, previously, you could eBay the chip and turn a good profit, in all likelihood, if you didn't want to keep it, or find a buyer here. The key is to have orders for at least 10. It looks like we have 7 now, possibly 9, unless these are MC-only requests, but I will happily grab the stock if the interest is there.

Need to hear from hooverphonique and zybex17 as to whether XC parts are OK, or if their requests are MC-only.

Yulquen -- I can't *guarantee* the chips beyond the normal clock rating, but this is typically fine 99% of the time. I think Motorola stress tested all batches at 66MHz to rate a CPU at 50MHz. It's subjective, because you should use cooling. In the old days, an old 486 heat sink/fan would do, but there is a lot of "active" cooling product out there, and there is a lot written about it.

Here's how we're going to do this at this point. It looks like we've got the interest for 68060 parts, but I need to have at least 10. The jury's still out on 68882 parts, we have only 4 or maybe 5 interested parties.

The goal is to get the best price. After we conclude stating of interest on Monday, I will find out what the price will be for each part, as this depends on the quantity. I recently sold Yulquen 1 full 68060 and 1 LC 060, the full was $74 (see the recent thread). At this point, I can say that the whole point of pooling interest is to get a good price, a little better than that sale at quantity 1. Remember we're talking about *new* parts.

If anyone has a ceiling price to attach to their interest, please state it, for the record, as I will need to know when I go to my contact.

Depending on the amount of demand, we can talk about bundling shipping where appropriate, if anyone wants to do this, or I can simply handle the packaging and shipping individually. If you've bought a CPU from me, you know that I am careful about this and take full responsibility for delivery and functionality. I will know more by Tuesday where I will state everything explicitly, but I may need a few days to process everything, but I will do my best, and those that know me know that I do everything in my power to be fast and to make sure everyone is happy. If you're new to this thread, we're talking about brand new 68060 @ 50MHz CPUs. These will be similar to the six to ten units sold in the past couple of months, so please see those threads if you need more detail, or ask here. Functional part number is XC68060RC50. Quality/Condition is brand new. Supply is here in the USA. Guaranteed Motorola, guaranteed FULL CPU/MMU/FPU, all that you would expect. I can further guarantee that the parts have not been remarked or altered in any way, they're sealed in ISO-compliant bags. The only possible marking discrepancy would happen at the Motorola factory (see other threads, for example, marking a full chip as an EC by Motorola for supply purposes).

Regarding XC68882RC50[A] -- I don't know if we've got the numbers for these, guys, unless there's a surge in interest. Regardless, I will do what I can to get ahold of some for those that want them.

The CPUs become more unstable the hotter they get, so the better the cooling technology, the better the overclocking potential.

Way back, I used 486 products.. They may be a bit small for a 68060, but Pentium products are generally too big... The name of the game is reducing the heat. The 68060 runs at 3.3V, so it's better than a 68040, for example (5V). There are other considerations -- your memory needs to keep up, for example :).

There's a lot of new technology out there, and a lot of Amigans and Atarians overclock, so there's a lot of information out there if you search the boards. Here's an example:

BTW -- you're right about the MC cynicism -- my guess is that a lot of people have tactfully remarked XC CPUs and may not even know it :). Considering that FreeScale wants over $350 for a quantity 1000 purchase, and USA Motorola distributors average over $550 per unit, there are a lot of individuals trying to capitalize on the market.

Same guarantees, if you know me, or if you have followed my threads, I know a bit about 060s and there aren't many new condition units floating around at this price point. I have approximately five (5) units, brand new 68060, again guaranteed to be full versions with full CPU, MMU, and FPU, guaranteed for 30 days or until you can reasonably test with your hardware by replacement or refund (in that order) as described in this thread and recent other posts here in the "For Sale" section of AmiBay. If there is any new or existing interest declared, to be fair, I think it should be declared by the end of day Monday or Tuesday (August 20th, 2013), marking a week from my formal post about pricing and availability. If these are not sold through that date, I will probably withdraw the supply and contain this thread to the existing purchasers, mentioned above. The point of this thread was to pool interest for a good price, so pricing is not guaranteed beyond the date mentioned above.

It took me while, but now I declare interest in two pieces, but with one condition - I need them to make 80MHz overclocked - for my WarpEngine 040 -> 060. Is there any chance that one of them (MC/XC I don't care) will make it? Are they at least rev 5? Sending PM.

I think baderman is withdrawing interest. He asked for a few hours to consider it, and sent me a PM, I don't know if he will post here, but if not, I would assume his interest is withdrawn.

Any other takers at this price? These are the last I have of the brand new batch, and I think my contact has either sold me all that he will or is completely out of them. At the same time, as I've said, this thread pooled interest for people who declared interest days/weeks before ordering, and it's not fair if I let this thread (and this discounted price) go on. So, any others, speak now. This is potentially the end of a *very* reliable supply of new, full, genuine Motorola 68060 chips. These things are nearly 20 years old, and running into new parts is not all that common any more ;).

There are still a couple of pieces available, exactly how many depends on declared interest, but we're basically at the end of the supply (1-3 pieces, I think). If you want one of these full, new 68060 CPUs (please see previous posts for more details and description), they're probably going to be gone soon. Interest declared for more than 1 or 2 pieces is not guaranteed, subject to supply.
