really cool setups, though I gather they run hot.

Maybe you should invest in some airconditioning - you seem to be serious enough about folding to justify it. Inverter-based ones are rather economical I hear - but I am not an expert myself.

Love the setup John! Looking good with the 3 monitors and such.


As for cooling, I usually try to buy low wattage components, great i3 over mid i5 for example, (though I understand that it wouldn't be as good for folding in a desktop system), and graphics cards with 25nm processes on their GPU.

Failing that air conditioning as mentioned above would be the ultimate solution, think server room. lol.

Other than that or going the liquid cooling route, the only thing you can really do is invest in some awesome case fans and CPU/GPU coolers.

It's also usually much more efficient to have the side on the case with some good fans in them. It sounds counter-productive but a near air-tight case with fans pulling air in and blowing hot air out will be better at cooling overall than an open one.

Also you'll want to give the fans room to get the air out at the back of the tower. I'd recommend a 12 inch gap at a minimum. :thumbsup:

My PC runs cool using 4x case fans (2x 140mm, 1x 90mm, 1x 80mm). My i5 3570K CPU (stock) is using the trusty old Arctic Freezer 7 Pro Rev 2 and my HIS IceQ Radeon 7950 GPU has a massive blower type cooler!... All nice and cool here :).

I did have another PC with an i5 2500 CPU and nVidia GTX 660Ti GPU, but i left that with my ex when i moved out (my daughters mother)... I imagine that system is running slightly warmer though as the Xigmatek case only had a couple of fans and the GTX 660Ti always ran a bit warmer (and slightly slower) than my Radeon 7950.

5 140mm fans, 3 in the front, 1 in the top, 1 in the back.
3 120mm fans, 1 for the cpu cooling block Megahalems, 1 in the middle of the case and one on the Lian Li HDD case.

All I can say is keep the case closed as much as possible, this gives more push and pull trough the case.

120mm in the PSU, 120mm on the back of the cabinet behind the CPU and 120mm on the CPU. Quiet and no problem staying cool, even in this heat. GPU has a smaller more noisy fan which is running slow when idling but a bit noisy when gaming. Not running anything on the GPU on the desktop (waste of energy).

The cabinet (Antec P193) also had a 200mm fan on the side but I had to remove it as my large CPU cooler wouldn't fit otherwise. So that leaves a big hole in the side, which I'd rather not have, but can't do much about. It also has 2x140mm fans on the top, but they are both disabled. They were noisy and wasn't necessary.

I usually cover those types of holes with Plexi-Glas. It's easy to cut and drill to the right size and leaves a windows to see all the PC goodness inside :)

thanks guys my gpus run 24/7 and are always over 60c up to 80c some times

as you see in the pictures various fans are installed and the sides are off just to show the insides

Not sure if i'm reading that correctly?... 64c CPU temp with only a 29% CPU load? Seems a bit high and i'd hate to see how hot it gets under full load :o. What CPU are you using? My i5 3570K never goes over 60C under full load (and it's using a cheap Arctic Freezer 7 Pro Rev2 cooler). Your CPU voltage is the same as mine too (it hits around 1.20v - 1.25v under load).

My HIS Radeon 7950 has never gone over 61c when stressed and my KFA2 GTX 660Ti used to hit 70c (and it has 2 fans).... I don't have the GTX 660Ti anymore.

I found the best method of cooling was a new case...

I currently have a Zalman Z9. I chose this because:
1) The PSU is at the bottom of the case, it draws cold air in from the bottom and blows warm air out of the back, keeping the psu nice and cool, and not relying on it for case cooling.

2) It has a 12cm fan at the bottom, to force cold air in. It has space for 2 12cm fans at the top for force the risen warm air out. There are spaces for more fans at the front and rear should you wish (which I did!)

3) Good cable management to allow air to flow freely.

The only downside is it had lots of stupid holes on the side of the case to ruin the airflow. I bought one of these, cut it up and taped it to the inside of the case, meaning the airflow was more under control

Kept a Phenomx6 1100T and a Radeon 7870 under control when maxed - the radeon's fans didn't even speed up beyond their default settings. My old standard case with the same board in used to threaten shutdown when maxing a GTX480

The best way to cool all of your system at once is to lower the room temperature to 10-13c

Here in sweden you can get a wallmounted system that achive just that for about 5000sek = about 500GBP

The amount of fans will not make to much of a difference when that summer heat gets the room to 23-26c.

So get the room temp down and they will come :)

Just use a corsair h100i for my 3700k i7. Idles at 40c and doesn't get much hotter under load.
My gtx 660. Never checked, not fussed either.

i have corsair h50-1 on each of the i5 750s and a corsair h55 on the i5 2500k which are all fine its my gpus that are radiators

1 560ti
2 660s
2 760s

they all sit between 60-70c at full load

How can the cpu be cooler than the room? Even if you blow your 24c air onto an item that do not produce heat it still will only be 24c at the lowest, you cant cool anything to a lower temperature then the air you are cooling with.

My room at the moment is 25c. My i5 3570k is currently idling at 32c and my Radeon 7950 is currently idling at 30c (just web browsing and listening to music). My system has a total of 7 various sized fans (PSU, case, CPU & GPU).... No water cooling needed here :).

EDIT: I'll also add that my HDD is 29c and the motherboard chipset is 36c. There's another 'unknown' temperature hovering around 34-36c which could either be the PSU or possibly RAM :unsure:?

Core i7 975EE and the Megahalems is sideways cause of the Corsair Vengeance coolingblocks, so not the ideal position for a cpu cooler, I'm looking at a replacement so the fan can be inline again with the air flow.

This full load, running Prime95, large FFT's.

And like you said above here, room temp, is 30 degrees, it even peaked 33 at noon, I HATE FLAT ROOFS :censored:

I looked into that, but air cooled works fine for me, if I don't run full load in this heat, which I rarely reach, then it's all good.

Before this, it was with 2 fans push/pull and rarely saw the temp go above 70.
But it's time for a new cooler, this picture was taken almost 2 years ago, so time for new cooling paste.

that is a funny orientation for a cpu cooler.

It is also possible to use compressor cooling which is a lot more efficient than peltier elements (and more expensive). One of the main problems with both of these types are condensation around the parts that you are cooling, so thermal insulation is very important.

Would not matter, if the diod is incorectly calibrated or faulty in any other way the bios will show you the exact same numbers as the software you are using in your OS

Yeah I was thinking it could be the software though, but if the BIOS says the same its definitely the sensor, or he has the PC in some kind of temperature vortex, lol.

Thats some nice tech!

How efficient are they? Do they generate any moisture or anything?

Moisture is a possibility when using it in high humidity environments with a cool+idle CPU, but then the Peltier is not required at all.

Comes in flavours of up to 90W, IIRC.

Well I'm in the process of overhauling my pc a bit, a Noctua NH-D14 is here already and just by some luck I managed to get the Intel DX58SO2 instead of the DX58SO I have.

It was either the board or new memory, so 2 x 8GB or 4 x 4GB low profile, both around the same price as the motherboard.
Easy choice then as the motherboard also has SATA II and USB 3.0.

I couldn't make the Noctua fit also with the Corsair Vengance memory, but the Noctua is far higher than the Prolimatech Megahalems (heatpipes extend a lot higher).

The only thing I need to do for that board, is install MOSFET cooling blocks, if the photo is the actual board, then for some reason they have removed those.

I can only think of 1 reason, some tried a serious overclock on it, although the description said no repaired and factory new.
I will also try to get a 920 to test the board with that, I don't want to damage my 975EE.

First of all the price, is factory retail, once you look around a bit, you can get it for half of that.
Might be a good idea to install this instead of the stock cooler, but if anyone has a better idea, do say so.

What was wrong with your 2500K setup? It probably would have been cheaper just to get a 2700K or 3770K if you wanted/needed an i7 (most older boards support Ivy Bridge). Haswell doesn't really offer any decent improvements (especially when it comes to gaming). I'm going to assume you do more than gaming with that new CPU? Or did you get the itchy upgrade bug? :D

The only upgrade i'd maybe consider is my GPU, which is still coping fine for now (3GB Radeon 7950 Boost). I don't think i'll bother upgrading the motherboard, CPU and RAM for a while... Maybe i'll wait and see what Broadwell (or possibly an AMD CPU) have to offer before my next overhaul :).

I don't actually do much gaming and I know it could have been cheaper but wanted to get a high end cpu as I always had mid ranged.

the 2500k can still be used as a gaming system now will get a new drive just for steam games and free up my main system

and leave the rest folding as when I game I have to turn the fading program off which loses points

Maybe not against a Sandy Bridge with a Panther Point, but my Bloomfield with the Tylersburg is almost outperformed by a Haswell with Lynx Point.

I remember my old i7 940 with dual 1GB Radeon 5850 cards in crossfire, now that was a hot and power hungry system (and my i5 3570k with a single Radeon 7950 slaughters it :D). Haswell should outperform any Bloomfield CPU seeing as even the i5 2500k outperforms Bloomfield with most tasks.

I know what you mean and i'm now the opposite... The most expensive system i ever built consisted of a Core i7 940 CPU, Foxconn Bloodrage X58 mobo, 6GB DDR3 triple channel RAM (good back then) and a pair of Radeon 5850 GPUs in crossfire... And i had a good 800W PSU to power the lot (can't remember what model now). It was a great system, but i felt like i'd been ripped off after a friends AMD Phenom II based system performed just as well when it came to gaming and another friend had better benchmark results with his Clarkdale Core i5 :-o.

I now stick with mid/high end parts and not expensive 'enthusiast' parts as i know it's wasted money seeing as my PC is used mainly for gaming, watching movies and web browsing. The systems i'm currently using is more powerful and was much cheaper to build than my old i7 940 PC :smile:.

Well this is not helpful, it only shows the i5 2500k against the i7 975, but doesn't show what boards are used, memory ssd/hdd's and so on.

I've seen a lot of discussion on this, sure Sandy Bridge and Ivy Bridge had a lot of OC room on the cpu's but not on the boards, that is where the Tylersburg just makes up.

The Intel boards were not up to it, but the Asus ROG boards showed some major jumps up.
I'll wait for the i7-4960X that arrives in September.

Sandy, Ivy and Haswell in general are better performers than the older Bloomfield generation and there's no denying it... Both my Sandy (i5 2500) and Ivy (i5 3570k) using relatively budget boards are far bettter than my old oc'd i7 940 which was using an enthusiast class board (Foxconn Bloodrage X58 ). Storage components such as SSD, HDD (and RAM to a certain extent) don't matter when it comes to benchmarking raw CPU performance. Asus ROG boards show no (or at least minimal) improvements when running at stock clocks.

The benchmarks shown are CPUs running at stock clocks... The board brand doesn't matter if the chipset is the same. Tylersburg had duffers too when it came to oc'ing and it's not always about the overclocks (i'm comparing stock as it's meant to be)... Anyway, an oc'd Sandy, Ivy or Haswell will still outperform an old oc'd Bloomfield ;).

Newer tech usally means better, and with Intel this is usually the case... Even if it's a very minor improvement!

I'm having issues with keeping my PC cool while gaming (any other time is fine) but the trouble is, it's a crap Micro-ATX case with what I think an oddly-configured SFX PSU running at a lowly 220W.

It's great for everything except running graphically intensive games (it WILL run these fine, it's the temp that's worrying, sometimes hitting 95c!)

I've gone through tons of options, and the only one I can come to is sell it, and buy something more suited for gaming - unless anybody has any ideas.

*I'm sure this fits under the 'computer cooling' category in photo booth, since i'm showing off my lack thereof and need to get it improved ;)

It's great for everything except running graphically intensive games (it WILL run these fine, it's the temp that's worrying, sometimes hitting 95c!)

I've gone through tons of options, and the only one I can come to is sell it, and buy something more suited for gaming - unless anybody has any ideas.

*I'm sure this fits under the 'computer cooling' category in photo booth, since i'm showing off my lack thereof and need to get it improved ;)

Oh, specs: Acer AX3400, AMD II X4 Quad Core, 6gb RAM, Radeon 5570 1gb Card (this is where the machine heats up, even with the fan clocked to 100%)

I have 8gb of 1600 corsair vengence black
and a case
my recent 120gb vertex 3 ssd also
and my other drives are coming out of my i5 2500k machine
also my 2 gtx 760 will be in here

the case has plenty of fan spaces

3 on front
2 on top
2 on side
2 underneath
1 on back

so hopefully will help to cool this all

Cheers for the suggestions, but the CPU is cool, and doesn't hit anything approaching high temperatures - the back of the GFX Card is the issue (idle temps right now are 56c, most games are ok, 65-70, not good but safe - but a few games hit between 90-95, which is something i'm keen on avoiding.)

The design (from what i've been told) doesn't really allow for anything to be fit easily into another case, and the PSU (going with the length and the configuration at the back of the machine) seems also to be a no-no...

Been pondering this all day, and other than replacing the whole machine, i'm at a complete loss...

Skyrim on low settings, FPS average (best guess is good) in and out of cities @ 1366 x 768

I think those will be a clear enough indicator of the improvements over the Sandy and Ivybridge chips, graphically.

That could help draw some heat from the back of the GFX Card yeah.
The PCI slot is open atm, so a bit of extra air, and I have been considering putting a second series of vents just above where the card heats up, even getting an external fan to suck the heat up from the top, but quite unsure how to go about it (essentially why i'm here, asking advice.)

I'll buy one anyway, nice and cheap... cheers :)
