Amiga Blizzard PPC

so here is my next chapter in the Amiga adventure

classic PPC...

a story of dread a misery i expect :-)

but for the moment only good things.

Blizzard PPC 064e 240mhz Phase 5
68040 @ 25mhz
64mb ram
scsi cable

the bad...

68040 (overheats badly)
only 240mhz ppc
loud fan that doesnt always spin

it did take me a day to get this to boot in my 1200 as it turned out it didnt like my fast ATA and it just refuses to boot from IDE ...its at a blank screen.

anyway with the ATA out and a decent PSU it boots happily in about 30 seconds to workbench , the 040 isnt the fastest thing on earth and i will be dragging that out and fitting a freescale 68060 60mhz (new) cpu at some point.

as for the PPC bit i need help and info on the required drivers / software and do i have to run OS4 for this?

i will make a note of my journey on here and i'll compile a driver database for the 060 side and PPC side , scsi and cd / zip or what ever i end up forcing in it.

Hey Mike, nice one I see your Amiga obsession is following my old path :lol:

Please change that fan ASAP and do not use the card it it stops spinning, you will cook the PPC very quickly! Also the 040 runs very hot I recommend active cooling, this also helps keep the PPC cooler due to less conductive heat.

Sorry to sound like I'm scaremongering, I just don't want you to end up with a dead card as they are great bits of kit!

If you can afford to I highly recommend upgrading the 040 to 060 with latest mask, I'd probably keep the PPC as is, there's negligible performance gained from the 300mhz upgrades due to bottle necking although they do run a lot cooler.

The 060 as you know though is leaps and bounds ahead of the 040, though the 40mhz 040 is no slouch which setup correctly as you can get the PPC to do the hard work :cool:

Re: drivers

The PPC library is inside the flash rom so there is some PPC software that you can run off the bat like ADoomPPC however I recommend installing WarpOS as this will let you use WOS software such as QuakeWOS, ADoomWOS, Quake II, WarpDT. I'll PM you some stuff to try ;)

Install version 4 then 5.1 on top, I recommend OS3.9 with BB1 & 2 as a good base to start.

OS4/OS4.1 run off the bat, but don't bother unless you have RTG as it's no fun in AGA.

i know your the ppc guru so i will be pesting you over the next few weeks :-)

the fan works and cools the ppc but its hot thats true, ive put a heatsink on the 040 so thats cooler now but the 25mhz chip is hot anyway.

060 asap ...

i think the fan is a 30mm 5v job

well some of todays fun.

Clean install of OS3.9

boing bag 1, 2 ,3 and 4

all on a slow ide hard drive because the fastATA wont boot with the PPC in it..

or it didnt ....it does now !

so i'll pop the drivers on , i think its an MK3

PPCdoom runs very quickly when it isnt accessing the ide - if it is accessing the ide it is slide show speed.

Havent tried Quake2 yet ... well apart from clicking on the GUI

i need to get my head around the warp3d and the PPC driver libraries ... im not there yet.

There is no BVision or Mediator/Voodoo on photos that is needed for Warp3D.

The fan is okay now , I've cleaned it and it's spinning freely.

there is a lot of software (expecially german software), programmed between the year 1997/99, that use the powerpc.library/ppc.library, even TurboPrint!
About FastATA, the MKIII work without problem on your configuration: i think, it is only a contact problem. It need new IDE cables and a very good connection with the ROM sockets.

Enjoy with this card: Quake1 ppc, on AGA, is very funny!

Thanks , yes the fast ata is fine now, I've just put the drivers on it and it's about 3x faster than before or so it says ... Doom ppc takes and 4 minutes to load up ...

I better try quake :-)

I've also fitted a fan inside the case, damn these ppc cards get warm...

That's strange mate.

Try installing WarpUP (vers4) and then immediately update to 5.1 then run ADoomWOS, you should have more success with this.

after the warpup 4 , 4.1 and 5 downloads the PPC is alive and well. i still have hiddeously slow disk access on the fastata. Odd that the phase5 disk or 3.9 standard install doesnt work properly with ppc... but i know why now.

ill do some times for boot to 3.9 and so on.

A little more work on the PPC card .

SIL sockets fitted to the 040 / 060 connection and the crystals are now socketed.

ready for the 060 upgrade when i find out how to do it :-)

The voltage has to be dropped but i dont know if this is voltage reg or jumper related ...i need to look.

pop the heatsink off the ppc side and have a look bud;)

the 68060 needs (as per the Apollo add on 3.3v reg)

It seems a 3.3v reg has to be fitted - i have one.

its a jumper setting bud,there should be a 0 ohm resister south of the 040,simply put it in the other position for 3.3 volt:)

Shame that the A3640 cannot be upgraded to 060 like the other 040 based accelerators.

Edit: I stumbled in a three year old thread over at EAB discussing this. A company had actually made an 040 to 060 adapter and they were selling it for LOLprice. One of the thread participants had got a sample but it wasn't revealed whether he actually got it working.

On the other hand I began to think if the 060 for the Warp Engine would work in the A3640.

Mike, sorry for sidetracking the thread.

Firmware updated and the 060 is found and working fine. The update takes a few seconds from floppy. So all good.

Everything seems stable and fairly quick.

Are you running warpos now?

Try quakewos, it should run smoothly in AGA :-)

In fact its probably something in bb3/4

I always kept my bppc setups bb2 only.

I can zip something up for you to try if it helps.

To be honest I never tried them as I always used Classic Workbench 3.9 and BB3/4 can cause issues with CWB

What I do know is WarpOS works perfect with BB1/2 so I recommend this setup at least for testing your kit.

I'll zip up one of my old system partitions and upload it for you to try :thumbsup:

I have classic wb 3.1 on a sperate hdd , I'll try that tomorrow too :-)

downloaded your hdd Steve my friend and setup a new (old IDE) drive and the difference is night and day!!

Quake is instant and runs super fast, even AdoomPPC now loads in about 20 seconds , rather than the 4 mins or so as before...!!

My 3.9 setup is great now, i cant make head nor tail or what hdtoolbox is telling me ...i have drives everywhere !

but i#ll sort that later

Yep with the 3.9 boing bag updates, it's best to install the first 2 (official updates) and then only take the updates you really want from bb3 & 4.

Ah ok ... i had BB3 & 4 and performance was dreadful.

but now with steves aid , Quake and AmiDoom , payback and freescape all zoom along.

i need a Bvision to get the PPC's best performance tho...

It's a great card, it always amazes me that you can have that all internally inside an A1200, will be nice in your modded A1000 chassis too!

Quake looks to be running nice in AGA as well :cool:

i can cool it too , ive already fitted an 80mm pc fan on a slow idle speed via a rheostat to move a bit of air.
