Apollo 1240/60 64 mb single simm

I made this mod to my apollo, because I don't have a tower and want to see some nice demos that require 64mb ram.
Apollo didn't accept more than 32mb per simm, now it does :D I don't know if it will accept 128mb because I don't have one but will make some more tests.
Did some mem tests, all ran fine! Tested with 4mb, 16mb, 32mb and 64mb.

I used a a gal22v10, because it was what I had here.

have you connected the missing address line,if so it should accept 128mb.

the question that beckons is: did you do it for both sockets?

I could use both sockets, but I choose to use only one. I used the missing adress, as I said I only tested with the above memories, I don't have an 128mb ram simm that's why I can't confirm if it works or not, but will have soon. I need to find a good design so it can fit an apollo nicelly. I also think we need to remove 27c socket and solder the eeprom directly, so we can fit the simm, or just find a nice 64mb or 128mb (to be tested) simm.
I just don't understand why didn't they do this in the begining.

I still don't know what to do, I never tested with 2 simms, only one, but here's what I have in mind:
1- Make a small board with a SOIC gal and a PLCC connector to put on top of MACH210 chip, like an indivision.
You would need to remove one resistor, solder mach210 directly on board and solder 2 wires.
2- The same as above, but instead of using plcc , I would be puting a small board soldered on the oposite side of ram connector, remove the resistor and solder 4 wires.
What would be more interesting?
I am still not posting nothing because I need a bit more testing. something like 2 or 3 days

hi mate,if you can do it so it doesn't interfere with the second simm slot im fine.

i wont be using it in a desktop machine,but i really want more memory.

even if it just ends up being a board with jumper wires im fine with that also,i dont need to piggyback the mach.

i haven't looked at mine for a while,does the missing line connect together on both simm sockets?

I am after a 68060 cpu rev 6 to solder here to make more tests, will be making a sch to post here.
This is very similiar to Speedgeek's A3000 16mb simm mod, the code is a bit diferent though.

more importantly,what sort of price will you be making these at please roughly?

i would be interested in one if it goes above 64mb.and maybe if i can still use the other simm slot.

are you connecting A11 from both simm sockets?

as you know this a major flaw in the design of these cards,thats why im very much interested as you can understand..

@roy_bates, I didn't connect A11 to second simm I will not use it, but I will order 2 simm of 128mb of ram and will solder another simm socket.

EDIT: i just did a little bit of maths,with the full address space being used 128mb would be the max it could see in theory.
if the other socket's address and data lines are connected together and merged into one memory pool you might not be able to go beyond 128,but i would be very happy with that as is.

EDIT2:i had a thought, if the eprom is in the way you could mount it "dead bug" style on the other side of the card where there is loads of room,as in upside down in a socket,fidly but doable.(i would be willing to do that to a 27c010,for the better good)


EDIT3: when you do the final version of this will you be using the plcc version of that ic to make it a bit smaller?

If yes, that's a nice idea, it would easilly fit a lot more mem modules.

that's the idea, after having all code, I would do it in a soic or plcc chip.

i cant see the attachment mate,by dead bug i mean turn the ic upside down and simply flip the card and put it on the other side of the card its through hole, it means bending all the legs on the 27c010 in the opposite direction.
i may be making this sound alot easier than it is of course,but i think you know what i mean.

Well here goes what I think:

If we use plcc or dip, trap door will not close. Solution: use soic gal.
Advantage: Board is the same size as socket.
There is no need to put socket bellow board if you solder eprom directly. If you use a slim 128mb simm it will fit perfectly.(This 128mb simm is broken)
So with this new design, we can get cheaper boards.

if you want ,you can make the pcb/gal with fly leads to connect it up.im fine with that.(for pcb placement)

i don't why,but i think this will work with the 1230 as well,i think that uses the same controller.

But If you have an 128mb simm I would apreciate, I wouldn't have to wait for the others to arrive,

i just thought i would share something with you,as i don't know if you know this or not.

if you program a 27c010 with the 060 firmware it will work with a 040 onboard.

I already have here an apollo 1260 at 80mhz. Courtesy of JCarvalho. It runs perfect with 64mb in one simm. the back simm I have some issues due to limitations of gal chip it only sees 16mb from 32 or 64mb simms.
The other 1240 already has 5.60 with 27c1001 soldered to board and it works :)

was the issue already there before mounting the gal?

i had a apollo that had problems after the second slot was added,turns out it was a bad connection.
it would only se half of the simm i put in there(one side)

but its encouraging that the card see's more than 64mb.

I wonder if the viper card has A11 enabled.

i think stachu100 converted a few,maybe he knows whats on the firmware.

i think the apollo 1260 has the same firmware as the 4060.

Hi! with current apollo design is not possible to go beyond 64mb of ram with one simm, I would need to go further in its design. Reverse what it does. and see where I can catch the correct lines to get full 128mb or more.

64MB would be just fine for me, awesome work Marmes. :)

I have some news. Due to Mach210 timing code it will not be possible to add more than 64mb of ram. What I did was this: I grabbed 2 signal from simm 1 (RAS0/RAS2) & (RAS1/3) and 2 other signals with the same designation from simm 2 and combined all those 4 into just 2. I also made some soldering to some pins. From what I took the apollo board, it seems they cutted features on purpose. It seems that the board was preprared for 128mb or more and someone just took the track for A11, because the other 2 lines for A24 & A25 are still there connected , but doing nothing.Maybe marketing, or just because they didn't want it to have more mem than A4040/60. There is only one pin that comes from MACH131, that I don't know what it does. The pdf attached shows what I did, Some of the pins are also connected to MACH131, but I didn't design them. My solution: the logic is simple I used a gal22v10, because it's what I had here in my house, you can use what you want, I did this, and it works ok with the simms I tested here. I used a soic gal soldered on a small board and an inverted plcc44 socket. This image is what I did ,but I advise you to solder the 2 33R resistors that you remove from apollo board.

I had to remove 2 resistors and solder the wires instead. The result is that I have 64mb with just one simm.
