Using a Famicom on a PAL TV ?

I just purchased a Famicom from the other bay.

Once it arrives from Japan i'd like to be prepared to use it. I've got a few pirate carts to test it with that came with some famiclones i have. These are from PAL famiclones (same shape cart as japanese famicom).

Anyway... Would these carts work on the Famicom ? I know they work on my real PAL NES using the adapter.

How will I get the Famicom to work on my PAL TV ? Its a NON-AV Famicom, so i'm guessing its RF only.

My Japanese SNES works on my TV perfect using RGB but obviously no RGB on the Fami.

I'd prefer not to modify the Famicom.

If it only has RF, then logic dictates it's RF only :p

You shouldn't need one, unless your tv has no RF input. PAL is the signal type, while RF is the carrier. I don't know of any easily available RF -> anything else converters.

You'll probably find you'll get picture and no sound because the TV won't be able to lock and decode the signal properly. That's the problem I had with my SG1000 and the UK megadrive I sent to Greece. With the SG1000 the easiest thing was to RGB mod it.

I think some suggested a US VHS recorder otherwise that could convert the RF to S video or similar.

A UK Video recorder is even better, because they convert rf to SCART very fast. Just don't bother with an rf to scart box, because there's a noticeable delay between the video leaving the console and it arriving on-screen, which is a very strange experience, especially since the sound is instant i.e. you hear sonic jump before he jumps. You hear yourself die before seeing it on screen

You will need a pal booster if you can find one. When I got my US Top Loader NES I had to get it modded as PAL tv's won't display NTSC RF.

To test the waters I connected my Japanese NTSC Super Famicom to the TV via RF (i read that Japanese frequency is between 92 and 97mhz) and I managed to tune it at 94.8750 (i think) Mhz and it works BUT the display is black & white and there is no audio :(

I have a VCR which has RF in/out and also AV OUT. Would that help ? The VCR is a PAL unit but it says MultiSystem though iirc it only means that it can play NTSC video tapes. I do know that when i had hooked up a PAL-I (UK) Master System 1 to it via RF I was able to get sound where previously it did not. Most EU is PAL B/G, so is Malta.

What -Acid- said is correct: there is no way for PAL tv sets to correctly display NTSC RF signals. Even with composite connection older sets will only display a b/w picture.
dougal, your best option here is to make the AV mod on the famicom, there are a couple of schematics available , pick one and test :)

Would colour and sound work or would it be black & white on the PAL TV ? I'm asking because my PC Engine (Japan) when connected from the appropriate pins on the expansion port direct to AV leads sound works but display was still black & white.
