ZX Spectrum issues

Yolo!

I have this 48K ZX Speccy. I never managed to get it working properly even though i've had it for years.

I recently replaced the damaged keyboard membrane with a brand new one from ebay.

Anyways just plugged it in and managed to tune the TV to it and it got as far as the copyright 1982 sinclair research screen and nothing else happens when i push the keys.

What could be wrong ?

I always try to eliminate bad RAM because they were notoriously flaky. Do any of them get hot?

i dont think it will be a memory fault stopping a keyboard from working.

when you inserted the new membrane you did separate the two halves of the plastic that plugs into the keyboard interface?
as one half is a insulator. when i got mine i had to trim down one side so only the conductor side went into the keyboard connector.

its not all that obvious.

That guide is excellent! I also used it as a reference, when fixing my Speccy.
Zorn over at WoS sells an excellent lower RAM replacement.

No I just plugged the two ribbon cables (larger and smaller) into the motherboard.

What do you mean exactly by separating the two halves ?

if you look closely at the ends of the ribbon cables they are in two halves one of them is a insulation sheet, on mine the conductor and the insulator sheet was both the same length,the insulator has to be shorter than the conductor otherwise when you plug in the keyboard it wont work because the insulator covers the conductor ends that plug into the connector.
