At this point I think a Schottky diode is just fine ...
I do not think the case of overly complicate the circuit with a MOSFET (also for the price).

Yes, a FET is a good solution for this as it has almost no voltage drop. Shouldn't be particularly expensive either as the dynamic properties of the transistor are quite irrelevant, so almost any will work.

I thought of an easy way of adding a pause function: just add a toggle switch in series to the "motor" line.
Open circuit: Tapuino waits
Short circuit: Tapuino plays the tape
I can't test this at the moment but I see no reason why it shouldn't work. This should be very useful for compilation tapes.

Thanks but... there's no need to do it in software with my super-clever invention! You could spare the bytes for something else... :cool:
Well I'm eventually going to add proper stop / seek / play support for multiload games, so the bytes will be used anyway, but your invention is indeed super clever :-)
