Apollo 040 fan noise
Hi guys and girls. I've just received my Apollo 040 accelerator from Baz and works a treat. In fact it flies compared to my Blizz 030.
However, am a bit puzzled by the CPU fan in the sense that it sets off like a small plane as soon as I turn the machine on. Its on steroids!
Do any of you know whether
* there's a setting to moderate it?
* there are other fans out there that are a lot quieter or
* whether the fan is a 'must do' given there's already a heatsink? Will I destroy the card basically if I don't use a fan?

gotta have a fan on an 040, but there are lots of choices out there, what size is your current fan?
-
One option would be to add an inline resistor to the fan power connector. e.g. Ebay BIN item Link ...you could make your own if you can work out what size resistor you'd need or perhaps have a variable resistor for total control, but keep an eye on the temperature to noise ratio.

Thanks guys - will give the fan power connector a try.
Justin - away from the machine at the moment but will measure later. I guess its 2-3cm square.

Forgot to ask: Is there anywhere specific online where I can have a look at a selection of fans?
-
to be honest i seem to remember using one out of an old laptop on mine (complete with heat transfer pipes) may have been overkill but was near silent :)
-
Interesting. Is there a smart way of fixing an oversize fan do you know? The larger it is the quieter I suppose.
-
true, but arn't you restricted by the case?
-
Possibly. Need to see it to judge properly but I think it can be slightly bigger than the heatsink from memory.

I used an old Piii laptop fan, 5v and silent, (you had to put your ear to the case to hear if it was spinning) kept my 060 very cool.
generally small fans are noisy but ones for laptops tend to be quieter :)

you can use a 30mm 5 or 12 volt fan directly guys on the 040 version inside the case...
