If you hook it up with the proper polarity the back blows air out.

Piece of paper, if it sucks the paper towards it or blows it away, you'll know right away.
I presume you mean without having to plug it in?
In my experience, with most fans you can see the cable on the backside of it and there is sometimes a manufactueres brand label on the frontside. (Front being the side that will blow outwards).

Trace the cable and see which side its closest to. I'd wager thats the back.
Fans always have supports to hold the motor to the frame. Rule of thumb is, they draw from the other side & exhaust through the support side. Another way of looking at it is they exhaust on the Sticky label side where the wires enter the motor.
