Blizzard PPC

Hello.

I have a tested and working fine Blizzard PPC. Serial is ICB0401, which means it has onboard SCSI, full 68040@25 Mhz and PPC@200 Mhz.

I am willing to trade this fine board, suitable for OS3.x with WarpOS or PowerUP and OS4 Classic, for a Blizzard 1260 with SCSI kit.

I am located in Paris, France.

To let you know what's happening, i have received an offer from my fellow-countryman Cosmos about an Apollo 060 but i only want a Blizzard.

Update: we agreed for a swap with sjwaller, but unfortunately for me, he has changed his mind for a new miggy project. I respect that, though i'm disappointed.

unfortunately, still no deal, either with da9000 nor Torajboy, as their boards do not meet my requirements.

Card arrive yesterday. Was able to pick up today! It looks absolutely beautiful and was well packaged. Having some trouble getting it to work. When installed the miggy wont boot. The fan was making a terrible noise for a few seconds but then corrected itself.

Is it possible it is set to boot from SCSI? If so how do I change this so it boots off the ide?

Yours is 040 or 060PPC? You may need some 060 libs installed, also what Workench/HDD are you running?

I dont think the noise I heard was normal, sound like it was catching, but now its just a whirr so I assume that it's fine. Its an 040 PPC. I'm running classicwbadvsp on a 4gb CF card on the ide.

If I remove the bppc it boots fine, albeit with no memory! :)

I am sure I am doing something wrong. Is there a key to hold during startup to change boot options?

A1200 hold down both mouse buttons to change boot options. Or maybe you meant something else :D

I cant even get it to boot by holding down the 2 key as suggested in the manual. Only physically removing the board works.

Won't even boot from a floppy disk.

Dosen't sound good, I booted mine from a Workbench Install Floppy earlier becuase I wanted to format a CF that was being a pain in UAE so you shouldn't have a problem there, have you tried the Bliz PPC in another A1200?

Glad you received it so fast. I have still received nothing so far.

The board was of course tested before i send it and was working fine in my test A1200. I got the boot screen without problem, then booted to WB with a floppy and tested the RAM.
I hope the parcel was not damaged.
The SCSI bus can take up to one full minute to be scanned before the BPPC boot. Access the board ROM to shut down SCSI by holding escape at boot.
About the initial noise of the fan, it could be related to lack of power from your PSU. This board is power hungry, so i suggest you try by removing your hard-drive, external floppies and that sort of thing. You should get the insert disk screen in about one minute. I always use A500 4,5A PSU with my 2 A1200 to ensure enough power for everything.
Of course, some libs have to be updated to run the board (see BBoAH for links to the Phase 5 libs).
At least, ensure the board is inserted properly and check it in the early-startup menu.
Check it too without your SIMM or with another one.

The box didnt look too beaten up. In 5 minutes it does not boot, the scart outputs black and that's all. I hold escape and nothing happens. I am using an ATX psu with my a1200 so it should have enough juice. I am sure I need phase 5 libs, but I was hoping at least to get it to boot. I will try reseating the board again. Just to check, can this thing boot without memory?

Yes but wil be slow.

There must be a problem with your setup then.
Do you have a real amiga psu to try it (maybe some line is not good from your PSU)?
What is your exact setup by the way? Desktop? Tower? Mobo revision?
You should also get rid of ClassicWB which is nice for a basic miggy but certainly won't be any good with a PPC, and install a 3.9.
Otherwise, leave it alone some hours: sometimes miggies with advanced hardware do not want to boot and are back to normal later with no explanation.

I'll dig out the amiga psu and see where I get to with that.

Currently i'm running it in a desktop A1200 with a 1d4 mobo.

As soon as it boots, Ill try something other than classicwb!

I'll leave this until later tonight when the missus is asleep; hopefully then she wont here my swearing :P Although part of me doesnt believe when I come back to it all will be ok :s

Believe me, this board does work fine, there should not be any problem.

Tell me also if you started it up without your HD and if you tried Escape.

Have removed the hdd and held escape, nothing, just black output. As I said, I will dig out the other PSU and try with this. Fingers crossed it is just PSU issue :)

I don't have a PPC so can't help. When I first got my A1200 from JuvUK it was doing this kind of stuff, it would bootup sometimes and not others. I reseated the roms and never had a problem since. Just an idea like. Hope you get this working, you really need another A1200 to test though.

Ok. Then try it with the real PSU after resitting the board, maybe cleaning the contact on your mobo, and wait for the SCSI bus scanning until the OS boot screen.
If it's still not good, then you should try with another miggy.
I wish i have made a video of the board booting before sending it.
The board has passed successfully a PPC test from the Phase 5 site and Boardtype from http://grex.amigaworld.de/index.php?lang=en&page=42 at the request of Torajboy with whom i discussed earlier in ths thread. Both programms have recognized the board as 200 MHz PPC and rev0 board.

Xanxi, I dont think you sent me a dead board! I'm just new to PPC and want to get this working :) Im hoping its my A1200, and its a simple fix :P Ill try cleaning everything and will report back! I have reseated the board about 10 times now with no luck.

You should calm down about the board, because each time i get excited about making amiga hardware work, things get bad. I burnt my A2000 two times like that. :(
Keep cool, try it later or with someone else computer.

Okay I have semi good news.

I think either the connectors on my mobo are worn/dirty or the same for the bppc.

I have use the amiwiggle and the amislide technique and with the card rested slightly before full insertion at the same angle as venus I can get the card to boot. It shows the 040 and memory not sure how I test the PPC.

Can anyone recommend what I can use to clean the connectors on the board which I may have in the house. I was thinking screenwash?

I think you should get it to work in a simple way, then confirm the card works, then do whatever you want with it.

This is the nightmare of everyone selling expensive hardware, someone not knowing how to handle it, breaking it and then claiming the card is faulty. I understand the seller's concerns all to well.

Jiggy, I consider what you are saying to be almost rude here. I am not planning to do anything to the card. I suspect the problem is with the motherboard connector; however, this connector was working fine with my blizzard 1230 and the blizzard 1240.

I am looking to clean the contacts on my motherboard not the card in the first instance. Yes I have not had a BPPC before; however I have been handling electronics/components for many years and always take the necessary precautions.

The nightmare for people receiving these items, is they spend a lot of money on them, receive them for them not to work and then feel anguish on having an expensive brick.

For cleaning the edge connector, just IPA (isopropylic alcohol) on an absorbent paper towel or cotton tissue.

The most common problem on Blizzards and Apollo with a 040 CPU mounted is the current required to feed those power hogs! Even a beefier ATX PSU can't feed those monsters properly if the voltage at the power connector is just 5V: along the way to the edge connector the voltage drops!:banghead:

So, what to do?

Simple solution: grab a dual floppy power connector with a long enough wire, solder the part without pins on the Amiga power connector and the two connectors goes to the floppy itself and the other to the floppy power connector pins on the motherboard.

An image worth million words, so do you want a picture? ;)

So, you have managed to boot the board? Fine, then leave it in place and close the trapdoor. In the past, i already had problems with a bad connector: because of the weight of the accelerator, contact was bad without the trapdoor cover, but with the cover in place, the accelerator was staright in line with the mobo and the connection good.
Dirty connector can be the cause of loss of voltage too, as rkauer said.

So, please confirm the board works and then fit it as needed in your A1200.
I wish you good luck for the PPC software setting, there are some good tutorials over the internet.

As soon as i receive yours, i will test it to close the thread and send it to my fellow Cosmos to upgrade it.

I sent it via Royal mail international signed for, I'll be honest, Royal mail arent the quickest of carriers. I checked the status today and it said it has been passed over to French carriers, so I hope for it to be with you tomorrow (if you have Saturday deliveries) or Monday :)

I see, sometimes it works, sometimes it needs reseating. I honestly think its the motherboard connector, I've never liked this mobo, aim to swap it for a 1d1!

Completely missed your post on this sorry! do you think this could be the problem? Sometimes it works, others not. Im convinced its not the accelerator and must be my mobo in some way, either power/timing etc.

Yes, a bit of IPA will do wonders on the edge connector, as you can see it have a bit of filth on the rightmost part of it (looking on the picture).

On the proof of shipment, i only see my street number "43" instead of my full adress "43 rue de xxxx". Is that normal?
Unfortunately, the UK tracking number is useless hence there is no tracking outside UK. I would like to know, to help further deals with british people, if there is a tracking method that works like our french colissimo, which tracking number goes to your door.

By the way, i would appreciate that you seek for advice about your mobo in another appropriate thread, as this one is meant to swap my board.
It would also help me not being worried about the risk you fry this BPPC until i received your board. No offense meant.

Hi Xanxi,

The proof of shipping has the number and the postal/zip code. This should be enough to construct the address so that's all they record on the receipt. There are other methods of shipping that allow tracking fuller tracking both sides; however, not from the post office. The item was sent international signed for with the relevant insurance.

As for the BPPC, I have been merely trying to get this card working. I have not modified the card in any way and have only done any cleaning to my motherboard. Which still works fine and is always switched on and tested before I insert he bppc and test with that also.

In light of what you have said I will stop all work on gettting this to work until you receive the blizzard; however, as it stands the card arrived to me DoA as I could not get it to work on first boot, removing from anti static bag on anti static mat wearing anti static wrist strap.

Let me know when you receive the blizzard and we will go from there.

No the board is not DOA and you would be seriously dishonest to say that.
It has left my desk working and, according to all you have written so far, it is still working. Your mobo connector is obviously damaged on the picture you posted here, with the 16 pins from the right seriously worn out, and it is the cause of your troubles. Keeping seating/unseating the board won't get it any better.
I am not responsible that you do not have a proper computer to run a PPC board.
I see what you have in mind but it's definitly no. You are playing with the PPC for several days, so it is not my board anymore and i can't trust it.
