Problem with BPPC 040/200 on 1d4 mobo

Thanks for the words :) This card has been the bane of my existence, probably Cosmos too!

I do hope there is a good resolve to this whole situation, but the further we go down the road the less likely it seems. I would still like an official word from a member of the site team as what could have been done in future to help prevent this happening to others as I feel let down and wouldn't want anyone else to lose the time/money etc

Cosmos is it possible to try one more reflash if you do not mind?

Ok card is on way back to me. I plan to continue the crusade to get this little device to work. Does anyone have any further suggestions? Where might I obtain programmed flash for the card assuming flash is faulty?

Whats the cards functionality at the moment?
Does it boot? 040 or 060?

Ok I have the BPPC in my hands. I did an inspection of the card and I think that a J106 is missing from the card.

Can anyone confirm this?

Suspected missing component is next to existing J106. Looking at reference image here: http://www.amiga-hardware.com/downlo..._front_big.jpg it seems that it is missing

Mhmm seems I can confirm that the J106 is missing as it is present in this picture of my card with Cosmos. Wonder if this is causing the issues with fastram

Well capacitor replaced, but still no boot. The bppc card just gets in an endless reboot cycle. Wont even boot from floppy.

I have managed to disable card reboot and flash the card. That completed successfully.

Is there anything special I need to do to get the card to boot with no ppc?

Well I can get the board to boot from floppy with no fastram, see below screen

If I try to boot with fastram it constantly resets itself. Also it doesnt appear to want to boot from IDE.

1. With Fast RAM installed
> can you boot to the Kickrom early startup?
> can you boot to the PPC early startup?

If its yes to these then the card is working and the fault will likely lay elsewhere.


2. 1D4 motherboard
> Does this board have the timing fixes done?
> Have you tried another revision motherboard?


3. IDE
> with out ram, will the unit load a skeletal 3.0 workbench*
*this is just an FFS formated partition (under 2GB) with just the workbench disk copied to it


4. Have you installed the PPC 040/060 libraries properly?
>This is important, i would download the libs from the unofficial phase 5 site and dump them in LIBS: on your system
>when installing MMULibs ensure that you select the "I have a phase 5 card" option


5. Power

I have exactly the same behaviour on this Blizzard PPC:

I receive it from the owner as "100% dead", but I fixed problem with oscillators and card booted. But RAM and PPC CPU were not wisible.
I don't remember if I could boot Amiga from HDD with this defective BPPC.
Anyway after long fight (including PPC CPU exchange) I gave-up.
I could boot witohut RAM and without active PPC only.

I suspect one (or more) programmed CPLD IC was gone.
Flash memory was 100% ok, I've checked that.

Because there is no source of 100% working programmed CPLD's in entire Universe (with except 100% working BPPC) I sent card back to the owner in this stage as not repaired.

So if you have 100% working BPPC with the same hardware revision *VERY IMPORTANT* you can take CPLD's from this 100% working BPPC and put them on this defective unit.

We all know that it's not wise...
But if you have plenty of time and money - yes, you can try.
At your place I would just give-up.

Marc, from your image, it appears that you are missing two components from the card, when compare with the image from amiga-hardware.com

There is a component missing next to the small chip, then one is also missing from near the PPC....

Hi Zetro,

1) Im pretty sure I can boot in to the BPPC menu, Ill check both of these later

2) It's 1d4 and has timing fixes. Im pretty sure its not board related as I've had two other BPPCs boot fine with board rev0(same as this card) + rev 2. This card has also been in a 1d1 machine here and two machines with cosmos

3)Ill try loading a skeleton workbench this evening or tomorrow when I work on number 1 :)

4)Would not installing the libs cause the system to constantly reset itself before any workbench screen is displayed? It boots fine from floppy with no libs.

5) I dont think its power issues as power supply gives out good 5v measured at floppy header. I also made modification of wire on underside of motherboard. I have also successfully had bppc+bvision boot on this same board.

This is sad news, I think if you are saying this it's writing on the wall!

Now even if I did have same rev card etc, the end result will be one card still not working if there is no source for CPLDs.

What would cause CPLD to cease to function? Card has not worked since day I bought it here and buyer sold as working. Assuming the truth was told, something in transit could have caused?

Im hesitant to give up this card as it has cost me A LOT of money now :( Ill try any suggestions.

I fear the end results is ebay listing as spares/repairs listing all its faults :( Only good thing is it has rev6 060 which is working 100%

Ok this is the CRAZIEST thing, and has been an issue with the card from the start.

If I hold the card in with a wooden spatula, it will boot to workbench with fastram installed and will display fastram at top. As soon as I ease the pressure it all go's wrong.

The edge connector was replace by cosmos, what could cause this!?

Out of sillyness - have you cleaned the motherboard edge connector?

Yup with an eraser. Also this mobo works with two other bppc and cosmos had exact same prob. Can there be a tiny crack somewhere I am closing with pressure?

Board is now on the other bay. Thanks to everyone who offered there help and advice it was really appreciated and thanks to cosmos for his assistance in getting this card to work.

On a disappointed note I have asked twice in this thread for guidance from the site team on how best this situation should have been handled in future for my reference and for others, but have received no answer.
