Installing OS4 on Classic Amiga

Hi!

I cant find a guide or post anywhere on this either here on the WWW is it a secret? ;)

Only can find guides for the AmigaOne/MAC.

I've tried the boot from OS3.1 option on CD but it restarts and does not load OS4, it gives a bunch of errors (sorry should have written them down)

I tried to boot from the floppy disk but it just tells me to insert the CD, obviosuly that is in but booting from floppy I guess I have no driver for the CDROM my 4WayIDE.

The final aim of my project is to run OS4 from my FastATA III and OS3.9 off the PPC SCSI, I have the OS3.9 side all up and running fine with WarpOS

My Blizzard PPC is 060@ 50mhz and PPC@ 240mhz + 256mb 60ns Ram, what can I expect from OS4 in performance?

First link I've seen before thats for AmigaOne, but the second might be of use, thanks for that :thumbsup: - I'll have a proper look at that.

Was hoping for a guide like the first link but for Classic Amiga's :help:

I'm planning to install a Multi-Boot System on my A4000....

1.- OS 3.9 BB3
2.- ClassicWB ADVSP 2.5
3.- AmigaSYS 4 R1.3 (v5 is Beta now)
4.- OS 4.0 Classic

Now I have 1, 2 & 3 working 100%. Of course I need to reconfigure when my new CSPPC arrives at home.

What I have now is DH0/1/2 on the Blizzard SCSI - I'm guessing on my setup these will be invisable on OS4 (OS4 does not support PPC SCSI) so I'll be doing a DH0_1 or something with the OS4 install and set lower boot priority.

Will start with the native IDE (where my CDRW is installed) and move onto FastATA if I get it to boot...

I have two SCSI DVD-RW working like a charm.....

So, I need to install IDE units on my FastATA MK-V -or at the mobo IDE-? This will decrease performance of my HDD´s (PM & SM)...... :(

Well I'm no expert yet, but from what I understand is the Blizzard PPC SCSI is controlled by the 060 chip and OS4 disables the 060 and runs completely from the PPC.

As you are using an A4000 (it is CS-PPC?) I don't know if the SCSI is different there, maybe it supports OS4? I have been told the native IDE is a bit slow for running OS4 (long boot time) which is why I will use the FastATA that I have stolen from my A1200D :ninja:

This is all in my A1200T (Blizzard 1260/PPC + Mediator PCI/Voodoo5)

Good luck with your project, and I will keep you updated on my progress.

Hopefully it's not true. :)
SCSI part is just connected to Blizzard PPC internal bus (let's say this way). SCSI chip don't care which CPU is controlling this bus.

AOS4.0 will run from SCSI HDD connected to Blizzard PPC 603e+ :thumbsup:

AOS4.0 with 603e@240MHz + RTG card is really nice. I have no comparison between Mediator+VooDoo vs BVision, so I cannot tell you which setup is better.
Don't even try to use AOS4.0 under AGA, you will be disappointed. :dry:

BUT:
Number of interesting software running natively under AOS4.0 is limited...
This is the biggest problem with AOS4.0 in general (I think).

- Voodoo 3 3000 PCI 16MB

Also I have one Radeon 9200 256MB DVI/VGA from Elbox.....

My PPC is 233Mhz... You know if OS4 works smooth with this configuration?

Thanks for your info Stan, I think OS4 is a nice OS to show off to your friends, but not expecting it to be very productive.

I'm enjoying the PPC under my OS3.9 setup with WarpOS and Voodoo RTG, its pretty awesome and once I get Warp3D running it will be even better.

I have a PicassoIV in my A4000D (but only an 040 in the system) but that is a superb card, I love it!

Are you sure BPPC SCSI works with OS4?
According to this compatibility list it isn't supported.. http://acube-systems.biz/compatibility/index.php

The UW-SCSI on the CSPPC works fine with OS4.

Sorry, but my experience is limited to:
AOS3.9 and AOS4.0 with CyberVision PPC
and
AOS3.9 and AOS4.0 with Picasso IV
I did not run any heavy software like 3D rendering or video editing; just simple "icon clicking", Direcory Opus Magellan, demos.
Of course CyberVision PPC is better.

I have no experience with Mediator 4000D + VooDoo so far (still waiting in the box to be installed).

I'm sure that partitions on SCSI HDD connected to Blizzard PPC 603e+ are visible in KS4.0 boot menu.
I was told (long time ago) by friend of mine that onboard SCSI on Blizzard PPC is working under AOS4.0 and MOS, but never checked by myself... :unsure:
If Acube site is saying "not working" it means that it's really not working. :(

Now I'm sure that Blizzard onboard SCSI is not working under AOS4.0 and partitions on SCSI HDD's are not visible on KS4.0 boot menu. Sorry for confusion. Acube site is correct of course.

I beleive that there is a difference between the A4000 CPPC (Cyberstorm PPC) SCSI and the A1200 BPPC (Blizzard PPC) SCSI.

According to the AOS4 compatability chart - the CPPC (A4000) is available to use the SCSI controller -

However the AOS4 compatability chart states that the Blizzard SCSI is not supported.

from my investigations last year the reason I believe its not possible to used the BPPC SCSI; This is because the SCSI controller is tasked/commanded by the 060 and not on a independent bus like the SCSI controller on the CPPC where its shared.

But I do not have a BPPC nor AOS4 to test this theory....

It might be possible to write a device driver for the PPC to use the SCSI via the 060 - but this wont be available at boot-time .... well not without serious update to either the kickrom or some kickflash firmware, then theres the other problem of PPC DMA and 060 DMA conflic too... hmmm... it may not be possible at all... =(

but thats all suposition.

when you get your AOS4 up - see if it can see the other partitions on the SCSI chain - its not going to hurt anything with'em just sitting there.

I think the dirty quick install method is the problem, I'm running the official installer now and you choose the display and machine options during install, this must be the best way of doing it, about 50% through and Voodoo/PCI should all be supported out of the box.

Where I was going wrong with the install in the first instance was becuase both your HDD and CDROM need to be on the first IDE channel (my CDROM was on the 2nd) this is why the installer was failing.

Well for this install I was just using 4wayIDE device, I've not installed the FastATA yet as I didn't want to pull the mediator and cards out of the Tower.

Install has finished and boots fine also installing properly has worked out a bit better than the dirty quick install :whistle:

Not having any luck with the Voodoo Screenmodes though and OS4 is pretty lame in AGA, as Statchu says. PCI is supposed to be supported out of the box but its not seeing any PCI boards.

Maybe it does not like the Voodoo 5 - 5500? I'm getting a Voodoo 3 from jvdbossc (thanks :thumbsup:) as I still can't get Warp3D running on OS3.9/OS3.1

Hopefully that kills two birds with one stone :cool:

Have you installed the Feburary2008-update from Hyperion?

According to the readme (see below) it fixes some Mediator related problems.

Installed the Feb 2008 update and now its working! Still need to have a proper look around :)

Glad to hear that the update fixed your problem...

It's unfair the CSPPC only supports 128MB memory... I only have ~90MB Free when booted to OS4 :(
An additional 128MB would have been nice....

to be fair, although you lose the extra 128MB of RAM capability of the card - you still get the SCSI functionality of it - and that puppy is Fast SCSI 3 =)

Yeah... a ZorRam would be nice. Unfortunately it doesn't work in OS4, only CSPPC-memory is recognized.
A pity since OS4 could use that ZorRam a lot more than OS3.9.. :huh:

Of course the ZorRam and CSPPC works fine together... in OS3.x you will have 128MB+256MB (+16MB if motherboard is populated)

In OS4 Classic you will only have 128MB from the CSPPC.... NO ZorRam or motherboard memory.

But I want to configure a dual System with OS4. Only 128MB for OS4..... maybe works like a turtle...... :(

OS4 works fine speedwise with 128MB (about 90MB free when OS4 booted)... it's if you run alot of memoryhungry programs/games you might run out of memory.

It's the internal design of OS4 that don't support Zorro-based memorycards. Zorrocards are sloooow compared to the CSPPC-memory (~10MB/s vs. ~60-130MB/s) so it was decided to not include support for anything else than CSPPC's memory. (Could also have been a DMA issue?)

Then only thing you can do is beg/pray Hyperion releases an update to OS4...

Firstly we need to discover what "memory hungry games/programs" actually exist for OS4.0

At the moment my knowledge of whats available for OS4.0 proves that 128MB is 90MB too much - since there is very little to do on it, other than run divx movies etc - which can be run via the PPC in 3.9

So what OS4 programs are there that use so much memory?>

I tried playing Quake but the GFX are messed up, shame since 800x600 was actually running at a decent frame rate just funny flashing screens.

I'm going to try Duke Nukem 3D later as I've stolen a bigger CF card from the wifes DS, she told me of the 2gb of games I put on her DS she only plays one game and that fits on a 256mb CF :D

Anyway I've been busy playing F1 2010 on my PC all weekend :whistle:

I read about 3D games and some applications. But I don't work with OS4 anytime and, of course, I don't have any real experience....

In anyway, I think OS 3.9 BB3 with the power of PPC & 16+128+256MB RAM & RTG graphics will be a great OS with alot of software/geames developped and tested. :)

To be honest my friend, that is one hell a beast of a machine and I have to admit I am very interested in seeing how a PPC handles DOS box with an RTG display.

As well wanting to play with some DSL *nix PPC Distro's

I know maybe is too much for AmigaOS. But, normally, I try to put best CPU and alot of RAM in all my systems.... If my pocket resist, of course..... :D

You know there is a hack to use part of the memory from Radeon 9200SE/9250 cards that can be added to the system's memory pool, right?

So the best option is add a Mediator PCI to your A4000 and on Picasso96's Radeon icon tell it have 32Mb of video memory (more than enough) and then you'll have the leftover (96 or 224Mb, pending on model) as not-even-close-to-fast RAM.

Better than nothing!

Yes, I read about this hack on Radeon boards. On my A4000D I think 2+16+128 is enough.

About my tower project... of course, is alot of memory, but on EAB I read some post about ZoRAM & applications.... and finally I decide to bought a 256MB module. In anyway... more is better than less....

On the A4000T I will install the PicassoIV & Voodoo3. I'm not planning to use the VRAM like FastRAM.

About the hack of Radeon boards.... the VRAM working like FRAM, Is really too slow? I read about that and I'm confused.

The memory on video cards where designed to get data fast (writes), but not getting it back (read). So the tests I saw up to this day tells the memory will speed up to ~7Mb/s (not very impressive, IMPoV).

Radeon: Write 8MB/s, Read 4.5MB/s

As seen none of the cards can be compared to the memory on a turbocard... but they are cheap slow-FastRam ;)

You'll be pleased to know an update to 4.0 is planned. This was announced at Amiwest and will be OS4.1 Classic.
