    Hi All,

Any advice as to what is the best/simplest/least risk of damaging stuff way of removing the keys from a keyboard so as to retrobrite them? Do the keys just clip back on afterwards?

    cheers

the method i use(you watch someone is bound to disagree)is to use a small screwdriver under the cap while holding it with two fingers and gently pry it off.(this is so the cap dont go upwards at an angle)

putting them back on is even more simple just push til it clicks.

    Many thanks.

Anything to watch out for with the ones like the space bar with a metal bar attached?

yes good point, you have to be very carefull removing this as its posible to snap the plastic uprights that the cross bar clips into.

its a bit fidly but try to unclip them before levering the spacebar off,it can be pushed off by pushing on the metal part towards the direction of rear of the machine.

its not too bad with the other keys that have this bar as there only short and you can unclip the bar after the button has been popped off.

with the spacebar ive found its easier to to put this one back on first because of the way it comes off(clip the bar back on then align the three springs line up the spacebar and push down untill it clicks into place.

One brand spankers Amiga 500+ coming up!! (used BBlonde)

The keys are really badly yellowed & not tried them yet. Maybe I should just look at getting a replacement set?

Do you think that would be easy to do?

there are a couple of ways, but the way i do it is to just put the keys in a bowl of h202 neat and just let it do its magic over a few days they come out as good as new.even if they where orange to start out with.

also in my case i could use the underside of the key as reference for the original colour,so i knew when to remove and wash them when they where finished.

yes i would think getting a new set would be very hard, plus the above method is alot cheaper for the most part, unless of course one turns up to buy.

    Quick question for this...

I'm having a hard (in otherwords impossible) time finding Hydrogen Peroxide in any strength other than 3% (any Americans reading this that have a source, feel free to chime in, but I tried all the big chain pharmacies like Walgreens, Rite Aid and CVS, as well as two different beauty supply shops), so to get a viable cleaner going, I'm likely going to have to go with the hair bleacher paste like Bblonde.

That said, the main thing I'm going to need to de-yellow are the keys, which I was hoping to do in a bath. Will a few bottles of 3% (I dunno, say two litres total?) with a quarter teaspoon of Oxy do the job on that?

    Yes, will work. Only slowly.

For stronger concentrations of H2O2, you might search for "urine rescuer" in pet shops. It's 20% peroxide with practically nothing more added.
