I actualy did really good...
saw a broken xbox for sale and the issues it had told me that there were broken traces on the mopther board. and that some caps were dying Possibly leaking.
it was translucent green and from the pic it didnt look anything special i assumed it was the old halo special eddition one "200 thousand made"
so i made the guy my offer and explaind what was probably wrong and how caps can eat away at the board. he replied saying he had been told similar by some 1 els and that atleast i sounded like i could either fix it or wouldnt give him a bad time if i couldnt and that he didnt think i was the kind of guy to spray it with some wd-40 and hoppe for the best..
well it arrived and to my very happy supprise.
It was the rare only 5 thousand in the whole of europe limited eddition xbox.
this little puppy is as rare as the hulk pepsi box. or the mountain dew box. and those 2 were never sold retail..
Any way the thing really was worse for wear. 3 major caps were bulging ready to pop. and 2 of the signal traces were corroded to nothing.
Because these traces supplied the signal for power and eject, the box wouldnt eject and the guy had been leaving the case off and opening the dvd lid to drop in new games, he lost the screws for the case and the little rubber feet (he had told me this before)
I replaced the caps in a few mins "not a big job" but those traces were horrible I had to get my magnifying glass out Clean off the pcb to show some of the trace "those things are thinner than a sewing neede and just as close together"
and then i spent the next hour or so tinning kynar wire lining it up touching it with a solder then swearing and starting again because it was wrong.
Then when 1 was right trying to do the second one would heat up the 1st so that would come off again. "there was a lot of swearing" few hours later without me smashing the thing to pieces i was done and its now perfect.
Of course seeing as it had been opend and was in need of such serious repairs i hard ware modified it and put in my last spare ide hard disk (160gb)
I guess this makes it even more rare becaus out of the 4999 others out there I really doubt any 1 would have opend theieres up. (and a good few will have been binned due to exploding leaky caps)
I know this is a long Post But its been epic.
I replaced all the case screws. gave it new little feet and now its Better than new!
here see some pictures.
oh and i hit up the black xbox jewl with some 400 wet and dry to get those scratches out then finished off with some gritty toothpaste so that is also flawless.
I put it on ebay for !LOLSERIOUSLY! amount of money.. It wont sellso il tell the wife i cant let it go for less and then its mine! ALL MINE!
A bundle of joy from AK![]()
It's been a busy week!
Tuesday night I got my first real Mac with OS X leopard.
It's the last of the Power Mac G4's. 1.25 Ghz, 2 gigs of ram (Mirrored Drive Doors). It actually runs just as fast, if not faster than my AMD Sempron 2100. This one came with a 17" Studio display.
Then, this afternoon, a second one showed up in the mail. Same specs, but with no Airport card and A Nvidia Gforce2 MX card, instead of the Radeon 9000. Once the software gets merged, the Radeon System will go to a buddy, who is new to Mac also
