I was pretty sure they took E.T for the 2600 off the shelves then destroyed them..
"always thought it was strange to just destroy them" but that is what was said to have happened.
So although it was never a well recived game, i wouldnt be supprised if people were willing to pay a bit more for it given its sales when new.

between 4 and 5 million copies were produced (depending on the source) as Atari anticipated big christmas sales on the game, which eventually sold around 1.5 million copies...3.5 million were returned as unsold, or returned by disappointed customers.

"E.T. met with initial commercial success. It was among the top four on Billboard magazine's "Top 15 Video Games" sales list in December 1982 and January 1983. The game eventually sold 1.5 million units, becoming one of the best-selling Atari 2600 titles. However, between 2.5 and 3.5 million cartridges went unsold. Hubner and Kistner commented that the large number of produced cartridges would have resulted in excess inventory regardless of E.T. 's success. Even though the game was a best seller during the holiday season, retailers still stated that its sales figures did not meet expectations. Warner Communications also expressed disappointment at the number of sales. Lower than expected sales figures combined with excess inventory, which produced a negative supply and demand event, prompted retailers to repeatedly discount price. Former J. C. Penney employee Al Nilsen mentioned that his copy of the game was discounted five times from US$49.95 to less than a dollar. According to Ray Kassar, about 3.5 million of the 4 million produced were sent back to the company as unsold inventory or customer returns. Despite sales figures, the quantity of unsold merchandise, coupled with the expensive movie license and the large amount of returns, made E.T. a major financial failure for Atari. Next Generation Magazine reported that Atari grossed US$25 million in sales, but netted a loss of US$100 million due to overproduction and returns. By 2004, the cartridges were still very common and priced at very low amounts."

Despite being a very poor port, PacMan sold ridiculously well (7m copies) and Atari was riding that high.

It was ambitious for a 2600 game, I'll give it that - the problem was that the execution was terrible. Of course, that's about what you can expect when you try to have one guy develop an entire adventure game on one of the most bare-bones consoles ever in less than six weeks...
Oh, absolutely. I should note that my experience of the game comes from approaching it with that information in mind, too, which wouldn't have been the case for those disappointed by it in its day.

Default Post here everytime you get something new!

Just picked up a Philips CDi 450 including power brick from the car boot sale.

Pics and basic testing (no controller) when I get home.

Works great. Tried lots of burned discs on it and all worked fine.

Looked in the expansion slot and there is the MPEG decoder card too.

Cannot test further as I dont have a controller.

Bought a ps1 slim with Logic3 Lcd screen.
Came with Harry Potter game, 2 controllers and power supply.

Works fine and the screen works with both pal and ntsc games. Sound is ok for such a small device. Just need to remove the ps1 and replace it with my chipped one.

I know I know... I already have SIX A500's but this all boxed little beaut was on Gumtree literally two streets away and there was no way I couldn't go get it, Batpacktastic!

Unboxed its pristine, genuine Commodore A501 RAM card and Commodore A590 HD which booted straight into WB1.3 like it had just dropped out of the factory

The 1084s is perfect too... different to the others I have, all controls are to the front including V Sync and just to top it off... not a hint of the yellow peril
