Melting marks on plastic housings

Citric acid is also good for removing rust.

Question regarding this:

Is this why most of the equipment I buy has white marks over parts of the cables, most likely from the polystyrene boxes they have been crammed in?

Regards

Polystyrene sticks to soft PVC. I also have cables with a layer of polystyrene stuck on some places. If you bend the cable the polystyrene is easy to peel of.

Also, phosphoric acid is used to de-rust. It is contained in a range of industrial rust removers, sometimes even as a non-leak gel. Some people even say Coca-Cola contains enough of it to work (I cannot confirm as I use directly the acid which is with necessary caution imho the best).
