    Default 68040 to 68060 Apollo

a customer request, upgrade an Apollo (paragon) from 25mhz 68040 to 50/66 mhz 68060.

    so here goes,,,

luckily the card is in excellent condition so it was an easy upgrade for once.

    original spec

    68040 25mhz

    new spec
    xc68EC60 50mhz
    new rom
    cpu socket
    new battery

    pics here

Sadly its an EC cpu so a full cpu will be required later as lots of demos and the more interesting software will need it.

    but all working ok.

    needs testing properly now

well after many hours this card is running great ...

    but.

after working the last few weekends on the farm and having no Amiga time at all I've spent the last 6 hours fighting with this card ....why? . Well it would boot to a floppy and even run floppy games but it would not boot the classic WB in anyway without the cache turned off..

i had issues with the 060/040 selection too but this is fixed now by replacing the 74F IC but still the card would not boot , it threw up cannot read from DH0 of IF fail error or just suspend or reboot / guru errors.
The usual suspects were changed , mach chips , ram , crystal and then CPU and yes it was the CPU all along.

it will boot and allow at the early start menu but thats about it.

anyway all working okay now and running Doom happily and some demos too.

    mike.

there is a different ROM version for the EC but the CPU was supposed to be a full CPU not an EC, hence the problem i didn't check if it was an EC i will tho

    cheers Steve

Apollo sold a 75mhz EC as i recall... in fact i think i have one somewhere

Yeah they did have one with an EC060 and in addiction to the Rom the 060 libs were different IIRC.

To check if the CPU is full or EC just run WhichAmiga

Yep that's defiantly showing up as a full fat 060, maybe it's a fake/bad one?

Don't know Steve , these are old cpus - who knows , anyway i have a spare 68060 that is running just fine in the Apollo - thats the pics in the above post.

The old cpu would not boot in to workbench under and circumstances unless CPU cache was turned off...

The bad one is marked USA xc68EC060 but has FPU and MMU or so it says
