Hi guys ('n' gals),

I got my new 4GB CF Sandisk Extreme today for my ACA'd 600 and i'd like to format it and prepare it with WB3.1. Now I got the ADF's and ROM files from ages ago which I backed up wisely (thankfully!) but I have never used them for something like this.

Basically I am wanting to go down the SoftKick to 3.1 route and have 2 partitions (Workbench (about 100Mb or something) and DH1). Can anyone help me out here? I would rather do it properly then do it by trial and error.

Thanks in advance.

Give me a shout on MSN tonight and I'll walk you through it if you like.

All hail teh d0pefish!

Not to jump on the bandwagon, but I'm in exactly the same boat.

Except I tried to do it by trial and error and failed. Any chance of listing the steps involved so a newbie can give it a try?

My earlier solution to get it working was to try (cunningly I thought) plugging the 4Gb sandisk CF card into the A600 via ide adaptor and then partitioning/formating and installing workbench.

It didn't work though, because the A600 didn't detect the CF card, only the workbench floppy.

Tried it in UAE (AmiKit), but again, the CF card wasn't detected as a drive which could be formatted.

Then I tried using a cnet program called 'EaseUS Partition Master Home Edition' to create two equal sized partitions on the card.

It began to work but started conforming with winxp and claiming only the first partition would be read yadda yadda, and so on.

I'm pretty lost now, but I want to try again rather than spend more money on a pre-installed solution.

:)

Edit: One quick thought, I've heard that Linux doesn't have the same limitations as xp for partitioning removeable media. Would that extend to my Ubuntu pc?

It's something that d0pefish would have to arrange if or when he has the time to do it. The only problem was it was ALOT more finicky when either of us imagined and certainly not ideal for Amitures (:p) like us. For ClassicWB from what I could tell, would be alot easier doing it without emulation.

I'm a complete Amin00b to be honest! I feel like a bit of a liability, asking so many questions on here

I'm going to try a few things, based on what I've read in the stickies and on classicwb. I'll try it first, w/o emulation, as you say. Who knows, it might even work!

Mike_cc: It does not sound like you are using HDToolbox at all.
You need this to partition the drive, on your real amiga or under emulation.
If you are using floppies the program is available on the wb install disk.

HDToolbox was used, but alot of the adavanced parts where edited also to get the partitions right. The fast file system on the other hand was not used.

Sorry, for not being quite clear: My comment was for mike_cc.

@mike_cc It sounds like your issue is that the CF card is already formatted by the PC so holds partitioning data that the PC takes control of when it is connected. You need to wipe the card completely of any OC formatting, then load WinUAE, add the CF card as an Amiga HDD, boot into Workbench and use HDToolbox to partition the card. It should then work.

Also remember to use the normal FFS and don't try to use SFS as it won't work on the A600 as it needs the minimum of an 020 CPU to work.
