Hi,
I finally registered. I have been supporting on forums to solve many doubts about vintage computers for a few years but I haven't much time to be active in a scene nowadays. However the time for a greater involvement has arrived hehe.
I do collect several vintage computers after I realized there is nothing like the real thing. At some point I first started to buy the computers and continued geting CRT monitors after tinkering with emulators first and scandoublers after that.
I always liked computers. My first "computer" I had was an atari vcs 2600 my father bought when I was 6, 3 years later after insisting a lot I got a C64 which is a machine that got me introduced to computing, got me to know what a computer was, what software was, computer peripherals, etc, despite using other computers at school I used the C64 intensively at home until 1991, I had the FCIII, MPS801, 1541-II, RS232, smartlink 1200 modem, atari joysticks,... from 1991 I continued using Wintel PCs, I still enjoyed computers, but it was a bit different, computers weren't that fun.
At some point I sold my C64 for an HP48 calculator (I loved them too), and sold all the C64 bits to pay me new computer gear. Somewhat I ended up regreting it, I missed the experience of playing specific games, and the environment, also I realised vintage computers were better to introduce computerts to my kids, and with time and space (I needed space to recover my vintage stuff
I got back to own a C64 and populate it with all the hardware I wanted, then I continued with the Amiga 1000 as since 1.985 I had dreamt of it through its advertising in commodore world magazine and continued with the amiga 1200 and many other artifacts from 1.975 to 1.993. I must have 50+ computers.
At the moment a computer that keeps me very excited is the Amiga 1000 and I registered here because I want to get a Guru Rom adaptor for my GVP
For top amiga power I have an upgraded 1200 but I like my A1000 to enjoy the oldest (and not so old) Amiga software/Games in a 20" SONY PVM20", the two artifacts couple very well together to get to enjoy the best of the 80's. I love the challenge that the A1000 represents, it is at first the less convenient of all Amigas, no kickstart roms, hard to find upgrades, few people using it providing advice, etc (I like that hehe). However it's a historical piece of art and a beautiful an awesome computer, a significant step ahead back in its time and my dream then too.
I have 3 A1000s but I mostly use a PAL unit. It has untouched internals, no upgrades in the case (no processor, ram, roms...) but I solved many of its limitations with a GVP Series II SCSI + MEM card originaly intended for the A500. I discovered that once disassembled from the case the GVP card works flawlessly in the A1000, it provides the A1000 with additional 8MB of RAM and an autoboot SCSI interface where I plug CF cards with an SCSI to CF adaptor. At the moment I have a CF with a WB1.3 partition and a WB2.1 partition. The A1000 would kick with a 1.3 kickstart disk and then continue loading WB1.3 at the first CF partition (it suprisignly does that even it's not set as bootable), this gives me full 1.3 compatibility, then if I need more sophistications I softkick to 2.1 with zkick, KS2.1 happily loads the WB2.1 partition (set as bootable) so I get a full WB2.1 environment in few seconds as it is all loading from the flash disk. I find this broad compatibility and convenience amazing considering the A1000 case is absolutely untouched as I am just using an external card though the ZORRO slot. At the moment I am trying to see all I can do with this setup. I'll probably try to create CF cards with more partitions with a possible 3rd WB3.1 and see what the old A1000 can do with the limitations of its chipset. The way has been full of joy and I always have the powered A1200 when needed
It's a pleasure to be here.
regards,
Ruben
