Hey all,

I hope you don't mind me asking for this advice, which will be non specific until I work out what's correctly up there. A very good friend of mine passed away and his partner wants to ensure that the things he collected are preserved in their working condition for as long as possible. I don't know about the Amiga side of things, but certainly older motherboards for PC that I have are plagued with bad batteries leaking everywhere and messing things up.

From memory, there are multiple Amiga 2000, multiple Amiga 500, 600 and 1200. There may be other amigas, we just moved things to tidy up the loft and distribute the load a bit better. Do any of these scream remove the battery before it does damage to any of you guys?

Thanks so much in advance.

Batteries: The Amiga 2000 will have a battery and if there is an Amiga 500+ it will have a battery on the motherboard.
If there is an Amiga 3000 & 4000 in the collection they too have batteries on the motherboards.
The A500, A600 & A1200 don't have batteries on the motherboards but the 3rd party expansions if fitted could have batteries on them.

Capacitors: I found the older Amiga (A500, A2000, CDTV) capacitors are like tanks and just keep going but they could fail but I feel its very rare, I think the A3000 falls into this category too but I've never owned one.
The A600, A1200, A4000 & CD32 capacitors fail and usually need changing hopefully your friend already did this if he was an avid user.

A good site to help you identify parts are:

Big Book Of Amiga Hardware

Amiga Resource (Amiga Hardware Database)

Sorry for your loss, your friend's Amigas appear to be in good hands.

These machines represent such nostalgia to so many that own them, I'm sure your friend would be touched by the care and attention you demonstrate towards their legacy.

Hi,

Sorry to hear about your friend.
I am based in South Somerset. I will drop you a PM as I might be able to help with capacitor/battery removal and replacement.

Regards

It is always sad when a friend passes away. My condolences. Do you want to preserve the collection for yourself or your friend's partner.

Hi Paul, & Welcome If you need a repair done (hope not). But I'd highly recommend HESE here on Amibay. Hese Sorted my A1200 for me after it came back from a recap broken. Did a great job.

I want to preserve them for his partner and for his Mum who always marvelled at everything he was doing with computers. Thanks all for the replies, I'll arrange a date to get up there and try to make a list.

Thank you.
