Hello my fellow AmiBayers

this is a call to arms as such for those interested in developing a fanzine / magazine based on retro hardware and home brew development.

(mock up)

The staff have discussed this and are excited but our main concern is not to start a project and watch it drift away. So we need to get as many interested as possible to assume rolls and responsibilites for the development and design of this fanzine / magazine.

We will be looking to correlate and publish projects and news from all retro enthusiastic communities - our premise is to give a bit more meat - and potato's to retro hardware both common and obscure as well as engage current home-brew developments (application and games).

We will need editors, writers, graphics layout, interviewers, designers to get this little project of the ground.

While enthusiasm runs high at the beginning of these projects we need to ensure that those wanting to take part should understand that there is a needed commitment to such a project. This will certainly take some time from your daily / monthly lives (you have been warned).

So if you have an interest in developing this project and being involved, just post bellow and what you would like to do, be a part of etc. =)

I can't offer any regular involvment, I just don't have the time, but I would be willing to write up a few DIY Hardware articles now and then.

Bryce.

PMSL!

You can tell Zetr0 wrote this at lunchtime, can't you?

It's 'role', Keith, not 'roll'...

/Merlin starts singing 'Beer and MSX and Rock and Roll...'

I am doing a thorough series on programming Amiga. Easy to read; with kids in mind. (My friend Berry is going to do the C64 part.) One of the goals is to preserve demoscene knowledge before it is all extinct. :-)

I would be happy to write articles on these subjects if you are interested. Either specific new ones or proper translations of the existing content. That was scheduled for sometime anyway.

More info here: www.6510.nl

(Dutch only, but Google Translate tends to work, more or less – there are reports that it f...s up the syntax highlighting or code.)

Good luck with the project!

I am happy to help with copy writing and proof reading, as well as a bit of artwork.

I would like to assist with article contributions. Perhaps a North America viewpoint would be beneficial.

I wouldn't mind doing some reviews. As long as a little humour is allowed. I'm thinking ZZap64 meets Top Gear.

Or how about a horoscope section called 'Mystic Moggsie'? Or has Merlin already bagged that gig?

Definitely needed IMHO. Concentrating on UK only coverage will alienate any potential audience, so the more who want to contribute from foreign field (i.e outside the UK) then the better for the success of the publication.

As long as it is in keeping with the review / article then I cannot see why it would not be included. Hmmmm, I am thinking that this could work as an editorial piece, a page or two each issue tackling a particular subject in relation to the content that looks at things from a different angle. It would, if nothing else break up what might end up being a rather technically heavy product.

Are you intending this to be PDF only or have some printed copies available?

As part-owner of a printing company I may be able to assist with that. I could also contribute an article or maybe a series of articles about the Minimig FPGA core.

Here's a couple of things Zetr0 and I were discussing earlier on the phone. One is to see if we can interview some well-known people in the retro scene and ask them;

"Where did you come from in the world of retro and what inspires you to keep doing it?"

In other words, to go a bit beyond the usual questions and find out 'what makes retro scene people tick', so that we all get an insight into the various passions that keep our hobby alive. There are a lot of people with a deep passion for the scene (myself included) and interviews along these lines with people from the various retro websites, forums or hardware designers, along with any famous names we can get, should make for fascinating reading.

Another is an idea lifted from electronics magazines from the '80s and '90s, that is 'Build Your Own Hardware'. That is, come up with simple projects that can be built on veroboard in a couple of hours that add some modern functions to older hardware, such as the Aminet PS/2 Mouse Adapter project based on the 16F84 PIC chip. I'm thinking of dirt simple stuff that can get people wielding soldering irons for the first time, that allows them to achieve something to add something useful to their machines.

Comments?

what about interviewing famous guys from the upcoming revival show

any guides i could help with too

I could probably come up with an odd review.

i like the last idea, why dont you put buffered ide interfaces and the like for amigas sound mixers etc,you know easy projects to benefit peaple with there hardware.

xe1541 cables well, any cable for use one these systems in general theres loads about.

you could fill the mag with just this every month or whatever,or dedecate a page for it.

If you can manage to get some interviews at Revival, that would be great to have some ready for the first couple of issues and would be good interviewing practice too.

@ Roy

Buffered IDE interfaces may be a bit too advanced, but an audio mixer for those adding CD-ROM drives to their Amigas is exactly what I am talking about.

There must be loads of these little projects out there for each of the retro machines, so we can pull them all together and put one in each issue.
