Occasionally over the past few years, I have gotten by old Amiga 3000 out of storage and tried to use it. Several years ago, it worked fine. However, in the last few years, it started having problems with booting. Sometimes it would boot, sometimes it wouldn't. The problem got progressively worse over time and eventually it stopped booting altogether.
Finally, about 3 months ago, I decided to try to fix the problem and started to research what could be wrong.
I quickly discovered about the infamous leaky battery problems with the Amiga 3000. Sure enough, when I took it apart, I found that the battery had leaked and damaged the area around the batter for about an inch in every direction as well as corrosion in other nearby parts. So, I
- removed the old battery
- washed the affected area in vinegar
- rinsed the affected area in filtered water
- thoroughly dried everything
- installed a CR2032 battery kit from AmigaKit
I then tried to boot and it still failed. The screen went through several colors and it sounded as if there was disk activity, but it would not boot. So, went back to researching the problem and found that there was no continuity from the + battery post to the nearby R192 resistor. So, on the back of the motherboard, I soldered a thin wire from the battery post pad to the R192 pad and checked that there was now continuity. Tried to boot again and again no success, however, the behavior did change. Now, the following happens:
- the power and hard disk lights come on immediately and stay on (i.e., the hard disk light does not flicker like it used to)
- the screen briefly flickers red and then turns to a light gray
- it sounds like the hard drives are being briefly accessed
- then the disk access sounds die off and nothing else happens.
- the screen stays light gray and the power and hard disk lights stay on.
I am interested in any help I can get in figuring out what is still wrong.

Can you take a photo of the battery area with some good clear close up that will help determine a few things have you tried to boot it up with the hard drive disconnected.

I went back to basics and re-checked everything. Turns out that I had connected the SCSI cable incorrectly.
Once I fixed that, the situation changed. Now, when I start it up, the following occurs:
1. The power light comes on as before but the Hard Disk light acts like it did originally, that is, it only comes on when it is trying to access the disk.
2. The screen immediately goes to light gray and stays that way for a long time. During this time, it sounds like the disks make sounds like they are being accessed every few seconds. However, it does not act as if much is being read.
3. After about 3 to 5 minutes, the screen changes to a darker gray and the kickstart menu finally appears, but the Hard Disk options are grayed out.
4. The screen then starts to flicker and white vertical lines appear every 1/2 inch or so across the screen. The flicker gets worse when I move the mouse.
I have not yet tried to go further by putting in a kickstart floppy. I do not want to over-write the hard drives because I am trying to retrieve some files off of them. I am waiting on a SCSI card for my PC so that I can use WinUAE to try to retrieve all of the data on the hard drives. After that, I will try to boot the kickstart and see what happens.
The questions I now have are:
1. Why are the hard drives not recognized on the kickstart menu? Do I have to look for additional damage around the battery area? What type of damage might cause the hard drives to be unavailable?
2. Why does the screen flicker? I suspect that it is caused by additional damage caused by the battery but I do not know where to look for it?
3. Why does it take so long for the kickstart menu to appear? Is it trying to access the disks?

I will post a picture in the next couple of days. I am waiting on a SCSI card for my PC to try to access the hard disks with WinUAE. After that, I will try to boot with the hard drives disconnected. Thanks for the reply.

Take it from me, as I have have plenty of 3000D's that had battery damage. IMHO, get either Chuckys or Heses new 3000 motherboard and start fresh. If you plan to use it long term, you will save grief and headaches. If not then try and trace down bad traces etc. It can be like chasing your tail and will likely be difficult to find and correct properly.

Thank you for the recommendation. How do I find out more about Chuckys or Heses new 3000 motherboards?
There was a fair amount of discoloration around the old battery

There is also discoloration underneath the battery as well.

Corrosion has gotten into the Paula and Denise sockets. If you haven't already, pull the chips and clean the pins. I replaced my sockets entirely.
