Amiga hardware (especially 1200) prices going nuts

Ok, I admit, from the period of approx 1995-2023 I lost interest in the Amiga, didn't really give it much of a second thought (except for the odd foray into emulation, I recall trying to get UAE as it was working on a Pentium II back in about 1999, that was fun)

Anyway, just getting back into the whole Amiga scene in the last couple of years, since the death of my father, who, like me, back in the day was a big fan.

When did prices of hardware (especially the 1200) go galactic?

Looking around, average price of just an A1200 motherboard in good condition is approx <snip> and how can Analogic justify <snip> for just a set of A1200 custom chips on their own?

First off Welcome. 2nd, be careful about price discussion as it’s frowned upon on here as per the rules ;)
They have always been going up.
I remember before 2020 (2017-2019). They were a 3rd of the price they are now. It’s down to supply and demand.

With Anal(ogic). They have a monopoly on parts, so they can pretty much ask what they like.
Keep your eyes on the Amiga Sales section as sometimes parts come up.
 
During Covid things like toy collecting, hobbys, retro gaming and so on grew a lot - and so did prices. I am personally tired of the retro bubble (because not all old things are great) and hope it bursts soon as it has kept inflating prices. I mean you could not give away an A500 for free here 15 years ago and now they command <snip>.

Yes as stated, price discussions are forbidden on the public forum. check the rules for more info. The majority of us all remember when Amiga hardware was a lot cheaper. Those were the days, although sometimes bargains do come along but, you've gotta be quick to snap them up around here! (y)

@sharpied79 It was argued logically in this post that of the five million Amiga made, about 5% remain and the rest...well, rest at E-waste dumps. That creates an issue as many long time fans "live the dream" and have a few, or go after their dream setups.

A thought crossed my mind: How many Amiga are left in the world?

We saw the video below, which told us 4.91 million Amiga were made. But how many are left?



How many were tossed in the 2000s? How many more went straight to e-recycling in 2010s? How many were killed by the battery?
Since wedge Amiga were 80% of sales, and since they tend to be easier to justify throwing out/recycling, then add to this big-box Amiga with battery damage/failure and especially those owned by businesses, which would have no attachment and be discarded/replaced/upgraded with other...

Additionally, may I offer some perspective? Our beloved Amiga 1200 you noted launched 21st October, 1992.

Wikipedia notes that at launch this beauty was £399 and US$699 respectively. Or equivalent to £1,040 in 2023 and equivalent to $1,570 in 2024. My point? Don't forget INFLATION! :-)
