Hello

I had a really cool idea that I hope to have up and ready by the end of the week.

I registered the domain www.amigapatterns.com

What I plan to do with it is for it to have a mysql database in the background that stores a load of backgrounds as png, jpeg, gif or bmp (png preferred).

The site will simply be a grid of image thumbnails that can be filtered by category. There will be a combo box or group od text boxes that allow you to specify which filetype (ilbm as default), resolution and colour depth you want the backdrop for.

From that point on, any thumbnail you click on will prompt an lha containing your backdrop.

I'd love to hear amibayers' thoughts.

Also, contributions are very welcome. I'm also a bit of a whizz at image manipulation so feel free to contribute images that might need up-scaling and cleaning up too.

Please send all contributions to my email address or simply upload you images to this thread along with any feedback you might want to give.

Copyrights are retained by the original holders of copyright for any image uploaded to the system, so images may be taken down if they request it. I am experienced in asking for permission though, though don't worry too much. Afterall, it's free advertising, and you'd be surprised at how many successful people keep a soft place in their heart for the Amiga.

The aim is for it to run as nicely as possible on a real amiga, so this should help keep the interface uncluttered and to the point.

Thanks for listening and thanks for supporting the Amiga.

Nice idea, just be careful as you should own the rights to any images you are distributing.

So really only those you create yourself or those that the creator has given you permission to distribute.

Good luck with the project :)

Cheers (y)

I worked on it a bit more this morning.

Mainly moving controls about, registering lha mimetype and introduced the Featured pattern item.

I really need to install all the browsers that I can find to my Workbench. Ones I know of are Voyager, iBrowse and Netsurf so far. I've not been able to get netsurf working yet so I'll give iBrowse a go next.

Voyager's working great, although it looks like the lha will only download to the downloads folder that's set in the settings. Not such a bad thing I guess as it isn't a huge deal to extract it to DH0:prefs/patterns/

On Amibay, we adore rules. So here are a few rules for the image content:

  1. No graphic or text depiction of money: Originally, this rule was going to be 'no gambling', but I think that gambling's fine when money is removed from the equation. This also means that if you're advertising something, nothing is allowed that discusses the price of product.
  2. No bad pornography: Attractive people in attractive poses are allowed, but it must be child-safe. However, good porn e.g. microchips, motherboards, wires and solder can be as seductive and graphic as your imagination can take them.
  3. Keep it positive: No hating. Middle of the road is okay, but the more inspirational the better.
  4. No attempts to tricking someone into doing something they don't want to do i.e. No text that says things like, 'Hey, old person! Show the kids that you still got it. Visit www.mymaliciousurl.com to seek, engage and annihilate the hundreds of viruses on your computer now!' I fall for it every time and it's doing my head in. (I don't)

That should be it. Everything else is fine. Even advertising is fine too so long as it's promoting a product's content and not breaking any of the rules.

I sincerely and solemnly swear to deliver the best service that I'm capable of. I'm well aware what an opinionated and sensitive swine I can be at times. If I don't like the smell of something I generally tend to take the bait and come out barking. That being said, I promise not to let my own personal feelings interfere with delivering the service that the Amiga community deserve. Even Amigakit promoting patterns are welcome.

The rules above may change, but only if they really aren't working out. Help will be given where possible. i.e. entertaining censorship and money being replaced with biscuits and sweets. That sort of thing.
