how do you get an amiga 500 to load a little program on bootup, like say if i wrote a little driver program etc.

Usually you add a line to the S:Startup-sequence or S:User-startup pointing to the program. Later Workbencn versions have a folder called WB-Startup, you can drop the project/tool in there.

Could you help me, im a bit confused (im new to the amiga 500)... has the amiga 500 got a harddisk?

It all depends on what Kickstart/Workbench version you have, as standard, the A500 does not come with a hard drive, but an add-on hard drive can be plugged in to the side expansion slot (on the left)

If you have Workench 1.3 (or even 1.2) then edit the Startup-Sequence file in the S folder, to do that, double-click the Workbench1.3 disk icon, then double-click SHell - when the prompt appears (usually 1.SYS:>) type in ed S:Startup-Sequence - add your commands (or filename of the program) into the file, make sure you do it before the EndCLI command at the bottom and then press Esc followed by typeing x and pressing the enter key.

If you have Workbench 2.0 or above, it's far simpler - just drag the program icon into the WBStartup drawer/folder on the Workbench2.0 disk.

Just to add, if it's a Workbench 1.2 disk (rather than 1.3), instead of opening Shell, open the System drawer/folder, there you'll find a CLI icon, double-click that.

A standard A500 does NOT have a built in HDD (that came with certain versions of A600 /A1200)

you can add a HDD to an Amiga 500,

you can go for the ACA500 , 2mb fast ram, small speed up and support for compact flash drives (does not require you to open the A500)
or
kipper2k's 4/8mb ram board with Compact flash drive support as well but you would need to upgrade you ROM chip that supports IDE CF drives. requires some skill in chip removal and fitting.

or

find a sidecar HDD / ram addon (hard to find and does not require you to open the A500)

for a new user of the A500 I would suggest the ACA500 for ease of fitting and has built in ROM upgrade so no issues with booting.
