Hi all,

I've started using my amiga for more than gaming :p as I'm keen to get some ideas of mine into an actual game on the amiga, instead of them remaining in my head dept of lost thoughts :D

So, I'd like to know if anyone out there can suggest a manual or programming book for AMOS I can get my mits on?

I've looked at the HTML version of the AMOS Programming manual (of which the URL escapes me), and though there is some semi-useful information in there, it's not much different to the AMOS pro built-in help. What makes it worse is that there doesn't appear to be any good help examples of code with examples for you to test and play with. There are obviously some example files which showcase certain things, but they don't go into enough depth to be of any real-world use. Some don't even have comments...

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

What about the official hefty manual that came with the package?

I'll agree with that. The AMOS Pro manual is very good and well written. You can try Ultimate AMOS by Jason Holborn as an alternative.

I don't have the originals of anything. I downloaded the AMOS Pro .adf discs and I think that maybe you're referring to the same manual I was referring to?

If that's the case, then no, this manual isn't very useful for beginners really. It explains the commands but proper examples are lacking.

I was hoping for a book or manual more akin to Idiots guide to AMOS

Maybe I'm missing the point, but I guess I'll set this up for bedtime reading over the next few weeks to see if I "get" it more by that time

Thanks for the responses guys.

I found the PDF version of the manual I linked to earlier, and it's better formatted and easier to read now, thanks.
If this still doesn't fill the requirements, I'll definately take a look at the Utimate Amos book Phantom

I'm coding on my epxanded A600 :)
Since it's a decent spec, I don't see why it should go to waste "just" playing games :p

Looks like it's going to take me a while to wrap my head around this scrolling thing in AMOS  :Doh::Doh:

Nice one:thumbsup:

You trying to do Hardware Scrolling Background?

I'm not quite sure as of yet :o

I'm currently trying to create a level which has background graphics which will scroll as the character you control walks along, but the background is independant and doesn't interact. It's simply there for nice-ness

I've tried screen copy, I've tried AMAL, I've tried using screen offset, but man it's confusing me. I did find out about the fact that there's a 1000px horizontal limit somewhere, which helps, but at the moment I'm just trying to take two 320x256 iff images, trying to copy them from screens 1 and 2 to 0 and then trying to play with screen offset, but I'm banging my head.. Wondering if I should start a thread in the Programming section..

Please start a thread in the Programming section!

That would be great - I love following these AMOS questions - it's a great way to pick up the knowledge.

I am starting to think I am getting too old to start with AMOS - I can only manage to read a few pages of a manual and I start to get a bit..... sleepy.... zzzzz - AMOS is great fun though!

Don't forget double buffering in AMOS (DOUBLE BUFFER). It will save you from a lot of pain, unless you want to see your hardware sprites flickering all the way.
