Being a Beeb and then a CPC owner back in the day meant I never really had much to do with Spectrum's and C=64's. I got my belated C=64 fix courtesy of a most kind member of this very forum, so time to think about the ZX Spectrum...
...The obvious (expensive) thing to do would be to get a 128k Spectrum, or possibly more sensibly a +2/+3 to play with, but where's the fun in that? I like fiddling with old hardware. As it happens my wife was a Speccy owner back in the day and still has her 48K Spectrum. A little while back she pulled it out of her parent's attic to find a rather abused-looking little slab and no real way to play with it. So a composite mod, a bit of a refurb including a new keyboard plate, matrix, and a DivMMC EnJoy later, and she was a happy as Larry reliving the good old days... for about 20 minutes.

I guess that makes it mine now! :-D

My usual method to get to know a system is to jump right in and give it a darn good hacking ...and so to my question, finally!

I can't imagine good old Sir Clive would have done anything more than the absolute minimum to shoehorn in the extra RAM and a sound chip to make the 128k model... How feasible is it to retrofit a 48k Speccy with 128k abilities? Has it been done, can anyone provide any tips / links? I quite fancy a rubber-keyed 128-compatible as a getting to know you project.

Many thanks!

Best thing to do with it Charles is just bin it... they are Z80 powered and a pile of crap !!!!

:D

i wouldnt bother,id get a 128.its not really practical in anyway

i like collecting old machines and having a bit of play,but youll find you wont be able to shoehorn all that into a 48k machine,not even a fun prospect

EDIT: what i mean is retrofit perspective,you can replace the motherboard with something modernish thats a 128 machine

:-) True, true... TBH I'm not that interested in Speccies, it's just there's one in my house in need of some butchery! :smdevil:

@Thread:
Thanks for the replies. I guess the general view is it's going to be a fruitless project. My wife's 48k will remain unmolested a little longer.
