Hey all, I'm in need of a little guidance once again from anyone who can offer it.

For our C# assignment this year, as some may know, I am to develop a simple side-scrolling platformer. We're not allowed to use the XNA developer tools so I'm uncertain what I should begin looking into first.

We have about 3 months to do this and I will need some fail time as a buffer first  So not very long at all.

Having studied Java last year, C# is still relatively new and I'm occasionally getting myself mixed up between the 2 languages still

Anyway, I'm just looking for a starting point, and perhaps a list of areas I will need to study to do this, etc. I have books but the language is huge (as are the books) and as much as I'd like to know all of the language, I'd rather work on what is needed to do a good job of the task at hand until the coursework is done given the time frame we have.

All guidance appreciated as always. I'm very glad that there are people here I can lean on for advice

Was any mention made of not using unity3d? That can use c# but since its mainly a self contained engine it might not be allowed.

You could give SLIMDX a look, that's a directx/3d wrapper that can use c# and isn't xna.

XNA is dead anyways ;)

I actually discovered XNA was dead last night shortly after posting when I stumbled upon an article. Seems a bit of a kick in the teeth that they now offer it on Dreamspark, lol.

The issue is that the current assignment has been written for Java as the other colleges which share the same assignment from the uni have continued studying that. With us changing to C# we would only be allowed to use what is considered 'equal' in terms of frameworks and tools.

As far as I know, there are no game development frameworks built into the JDK as standard are there?

So is it even possible to develop a platformer in C# inside a couple of months without a framework?

Found out what I need, thanks guys.
