Hi all, i know this is in no way related to computing but we have some people round here that know about chemicals so might be able to help.

We are trying to decorate our little girls room (aged 2 and 3) and they have drawn what they consider to be "art" on the walls with wax and felt tip crayons.

We have tried some WD40, worked wonders on the chalk board with wax, and we've tried heating the wax with an iron and paper towel. We have tried to paint over it but they keep coming back through the paint.

Anyone have any tips on what we could try to remove them so we can paint over it?

Thanks

Mike

hot air gun or hair dryer, heat the crayon, the wax will start to melt, then wipre away the excess and finally remove the remnants with washing up liquid and a soft cloth:)

What Justin said, and meths would most likely remove a lot of the felt tip pen marks.

You could maybe size the walls with some dilute PVA afterwards, to seal over the remaining marks and give the paint something to 'key' to.

If it's walls, I'd guess that they are using water-based emulsion paint, Chris.

Boiling water and a sponge will take it straight off. Be careful, though

Milk on a cloth  Failing that try toothpaste, one of the 2 will def do it for you.

Milk on a cloth? How come that works? Something to do with Alkaline levelness in Milk? I've heard of the other methods as mentioned already but have never heard of this so genuinely interested Amineo.

cheers

John

 Not certain why it works

Just been told baking soda on a damp rag works too!

You're right Merlin, I've never actually seen it work myself.

Well today i have tried, Hot water and a cloth, hot iron on top of a paper towel to melt and soak the wax, toothpaste, WD40 and Baking Powder in Water.

Don't know which of them actually worked but i have managed to clean most of it off and paint. Now just gotta get it off the doors and radiator before i can gloss them lol.

Here in Banana Land we have a substance called "Striptizi", it is very caustic, but dissolve everything, from old wallpaper glue to cement (lol).

Perfect to remove varnish, old paint, wallpaper residues, car paint(!) and anything bonded on a wall (and your fingers if you don't wear safety gloves).

And will likely take the paint / wallpaper off with it :D

what you have to do is this right...

Get a steamer and steam the wall then take the whole paper off then you dont have any marks anymore lol

If it's what i am thinking of, It was called 'Nitromors' over here, but I think the key ingredient (Methylene Chloride) is now banned in Europe....

Nitromors used to contain Methylene Chloride, Cresylic Acid and lots of other lovely ingredients, that they won't let you anywhere near these days. :(

It didn't contain Asbestos though

Safety data sheet for Nitromors here - luvverly stuff....

Edit: Methylene Chloride was banned in Europe at the end of 2010.

When I lived on the farm we had a goat that drank Nitromors. It dissolved all the hair off around its mouth and it lost its beard for a few months. It didn't do it any other harm though. I wouldn't recommend it though...
