I was working in my xbox today, I was cloning the HDD to a larger one. When i hotswapped my DVD drive for the HDD to be cloned, something popped and the xbox turned off.

So, began my diagnosis, I tried testing the output of the PSU w/ a multimeter, but it is the v1.5 ATX type (mines a V1.5 IIRC, has BIOS Chip) so I can't check any output. I had repaired it when i got it, the PSU had vaporized a solder joint (Foxlink design) and had worked up until today. I need to know, should I sell it for parts and buy another, or buy a PSU?

Xboxes are so cheap these days, i'd buy another. I have seen lone units (working) sell for barely £2.00 GBP.

Isn't it caps that generally go pop?

*still pretty much a n00b at electronics*

Mostly bad designed heat dissipation on Xbox/PS2/PS3.

that will teach you NOT to hot-swap stuff in hardware that does not support hot-swapping... where did you get this idea anyway? chances are you also killed your southbridge too.

keropi, he was probs soft modding by which you have to hot swap at a certain point. Doing it at the wrong time could cause damage mind. . .

It has to be done in sleep mode for the swapping part to be safe and for some kind of "unlocked" state. I've done it once, so don't remember exact details.

still it is not a wise thing to do, like power on/off X360 drives connected to 360mobo and pc sata to flash them. I don't want to sound harsh, but WHY on earth you would like to softmod an xbox console when you can easily install a cheap modchip? Even the most basic chip would be better than a softmod...

you dont need to hotswap to softmod an xbox either, it can be done with a memory card (including the right files) and a copy of 007 agent under fire or splinter cell.
However my favourite way was to always solder the TSOP points (1.0-1.5 xbox's only) to enable flashing and install a new bios and customizing the startup.
Like my current crystal console comes up with a gold Xbox logo and says Daddy when you turn it on.

The hotswap i've done before and its fine, I just booted it into dvd timeout and that unlocks the HD, its perfectly safe if you do it that way. This time, I think the PSU melted its shield and it grounded too much voltage, there was a smell of burned plastic in the air.
