I'm so excited about this I just have to share it with someone :)

If like me you are a PC gamer (as well as retro of course!) and you like playing older PC games, you will know that some of these old games come with a virus called Games for Windows Live! (GFWL) not only is this software the most bug ridden piece of scum filth software that ever graced a PC, it is also not working very well with Windows 10 (at least not for me).

I was googling a way to remove this virus from a great game I like playing called FUEL by Codemasters and came across this post on the Steam forums.

https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=268031297

It details a way to simply copy a dll and ini file to the game directory to negate the use of the GFWL virus. apparently it also works with many other G4WL games, but I have only tested it with two games for far (Fuel and Dirt 2) and it works flawlessly for me on them. The games start up fine with no annoying GFWL pop up, superb!

Just one thing to bare in mind though, this workaround will only work for single player, it does not allow online play. It's a shame but a lot of these older games have had their online servers shut down by now anyway so no biggie I guess. The other thing is that I don't think your old saves will work, as this program uses it's own saving format so you will have to start the game over again.

Give it a go, maybe we can start a list here of games that it works with and those it doesn't?

Edit: Slightly newer (and last version):

Just out of interest, why is this a "virus"? Is it not more like bloat ware?

thanks for sharing the tips because Games for Windows Live! (G4WL) drive me up the wall and it is very annoyed.

Well done Manic :)

Thanks, but I don't claim that I created this, I just found it :)

Don't some Games use it to save even for single player?

In Steam quite a few games have been updated and had GFWL removed, because from Windows 10 it's no longer supported.

Yes, but this workaround has the save feature built in. Think of it as a kind of GFWL emulator with all the annoying bits removed, single player saves still work, but you can't use old saves, I think you have to start the game over.

There are a lot of games that have had GFWL removed yes, but some don't like Dirt 2 and Fuel, there may be others that the developers have just abandoned and no longer support.

In Windows 10 GFWL works fine as ever for me.

Do they still have a server up and running? My GFWL (Tried on Dirt 3) just comes back with Server does not exist. If I click on Forgot Password it brings me to a page that also no longer exists?

Bryce.

M$ discontinued support for it last year, which is what prompted many to update their old games to remove it. I'm sure Dirt 3 had it removed in the Steam version.
