Hey guys.

Looking at buying a C64c, with a busted SID chip, so am looking for one.

Should I care which version, though?

Yes, you need the same SID chip code that your board currently have.

The C64C has the 8580 SID in it; the old 6581 SID chip isn't interchangeable.

Just a thought - you are aware of a small switch to the rear of the C64C that might be set in the wrong position, aren't you...?? I thought my C64C had no sound and cranked the TV up to max, then I wondered what the little switch did.....:blink::wooha:

It's not stone written that C64C has 8580 chip in it.

Some of them got respected 6581 AR 4 in it, which is 12 volt chip instead of 9 volt as 8580 is. So check it!

@Merlin

The guy who's selling it has borrowed a chip from a friend, which works, so it's definitely not a switch :LOL:

@bber

I'm trying to find out which chip was in there, but he may have thrown it out. Hopefully the number can be found on the replacement he borrowed.

@bber

Thanks. Fortunately the old chip is back in the socket, so I'll know when I get hold of it.

Guess I'm looking for a 6581 AR 4 or a 858, then :)

You can substitute Ar4 version with any 6581. Which will help you if you actually have that chip.

I have a spare 6581 - 3083 - that sid was tested, but the machine gave up ..

I am however afraid, due to the lot it came from it is 10 eu inc shipping.

I would advice you personally to source a complete machine for a very reasonable amount so you have spares. Well if none available have a look at my offer.

Thanks! The price isn't bad compared to what C64's go for here. When I get the machine, I'll see what's up.

People often come to conclusion that SID on C64C is faulty if sound is missing. But in 99.9% of cases, problem is with 9V AC power.

So check 9V AC from psu and PSU fuse first. :)

Thanks, but since the sound works with another SID chip, I'd still venture a guess, that it's the chip :)
