Hey everyone,

Due to financial circumstances I'm looking at reducing my outgoings as much as possible. I need a BB service for job hunting, but I don't need TV or necessarily a phone land-line.

Is there anyone on the forum who has BB only service and can recommend a provider? Or is it possible to have modern BB on a phone? I know virtually nothing about smart phones, I don't have one at the moment.

Many thanks.
Ed.

If your area is cabled then I'd recommend Virgin Media all day. I've been on it for 16 years through all it's name changes, I get the speed I pay for all the time (currently 50mbit/s). I still have the phone with it but only because they offered me it for £1 a month when I said I wanted it disconnected, they were probably scared I was going to go elsewhere. Can't speak of any phone line broadband as i've never had it in. You're still going to be looking at about £30 a month though.

Sky and +Net are doing free for a year but you still need to pay line rental for any service that comes down the copper line.

do you have a mobile phone contract ?? if so does it come with personal hotspot / tethering ? mine comes with 4GB a month tethering, not much but enough for simple browsing for jobs etc.

cut and paste from sky but you will need a phone line. £5 a month

Enjoy broadband that goes on and on with Sky Broadband Unlimited for £5 a month for 12 months. With no usage limits, we’ll never slow you down. Plus, it’s available with or without Sky TV.

Thanks for the reponses guys. I neglected to mention I'm already with Virgin Media (been on it for about the same time as you Acid) and they've reduced my package to the minimum they can offer. It's kind of why I'm looking for BB only without the extra phone and TV packages.

Sardine, I don't have a phone at the moment. But I was considering getting rid of my VM package altogether and just having a mobile of some sort.

Thank you,
Ed.

If price is your main criteria for choosing an ISP then I'm pretty sure Plusnet is the cheapest, I don't use it myself but the girlfriend does and she has no complaints.

I have VM Broadband without a phone line, not cheap but I am on 100mbps £35 a month (I use between 400-500Gbs per month) The bottom package is about £25 I think

I caught a quick glimpse of a TV advert last night. I'm sure it was for Vodaphone and broadband package only without landline.

This is only partially true. They just "merged" the two payments together but even so, it's worth looking into as it looks pretty cheap considering you're still technically paying line rental as an inclusive price.

BT do some good Sim only deals, but obviously you would still need a phone. I'm with three and they offer good contract prices for the phones you get.

Also have a look at Giff Gaff.

However no mobile contacts or sims are unlimited any more so are all a lot more expensive than a fixed landlines or cable. The maximum data you will find is 15GB too, and that's expensive.

You definitely won't get the speed or unlimited data you currently get with virgin. If you really want to go for the cheapest option dropping back down to adsl with plus net or similar can be as cheap as £5 for 17Mb bandwidth. Some are even offering some deals for 12 months free.

Do you get on well with the neighbours? Maybe they would let you piggyback on their wireless for a while, you could offer them something?

If you had reasonable smartphone you can even utilise free WiFi. Most supermarkets and pub chains now offer it. Sainsburys wifi is pretty good and you can sit in their cafe and have a drink whilst using it. And many pubs and resturants use the same wifi systems meaning once register you auto link when going in. Even McDonald's have a pretty good one now.

Regarding free WiFi. The place I work at installed free WiFi for its employees in the canteen but suddenly disabled it last week because they caught one person watching porn. Have they not heard of content filters and blocking.

I'm also with Virgin for this exact reason. £32.50 a month for 150mb fibre broadband, no phone line/line rental/TV/any other nonsense I don't want.

Have you seen the new Vodaphone broadband they are advertising at the moment. No line rentals for pure broadband if you don't need for a phone.

Looks interesting Harrison, thank you. I contacted Virgin to enquire about closing my account and they wanted to sting me for £144 early closure.
