For the price of postage, if you fancy having a crack at repairing this you may have more luck.
It powers on and self tests but will not load anything from Disc.

The 1541 Diagnostics page HERE has the indication,

UC3 6522 VIA (SERIAL INTERFACE)
Drive powers up and resets normally. When LOAD attempted, screen
indicates "SEARCHING FOR ...", but no motors run and red LED does not
light.

The voltage are all good and well within tolerances and I have swapped the chips over to no effect, which indicates a fault elsewhere.
The Cable looks pretty ropey, but works 100%, I tested it on my working 1541.
I simply don't have the time to really go to town testing this and hopefully repairing it, so I'm offering it here.

@rojaws

I have a spare 6522 VIA (for my Acorn BBC's :p)

I think Zeets is in the process of preparing a p2G package for me, if this is the case, would you be able to liase with Zetr0 and look to see if we can chuck the drive into the box for me as well.....

If not no worries my friend.

TC, you're welcome to it chap. I'll speak to Keith and see if I can chuck it in the box, although (unsurprisingly) it is rather heavy.

I swapped over the 6522's, one controls the Serial port and the other is the Motor control interface (UC2 and UC3) and it made absolutely no difference, which indicated to me that the chips were fine and the fault lay elsewhere.
But I am a Layman when it comes to these things.

It's worth a try, thanks for the offer. (y) Although I have swapped the chips over, and I thought it meant that they were Ok.

(This wasn't the intention BTW )

@ TC

If you want a spare 1541 controller board to try, I have one here, although the socketed chips have been removed. Let me know if you want it sent to you.

Thanks r0jaws

They are indeed very heavy, as much as I would love the chance to repair it I couldn't afford normal postage,, I remembered that Zeets was building a P2G box for me and wondered if it was possible to combine

Now to get on my knees,,,Pls Zeets :bowdown::bowdown::bowdown:

6522 VIA's are notoriously flakey sods, quite a common failure in BBC Micros. very sensitive to voltage spikes and slight mis-handling.

Would be nice If I can get me mits on it,,,, repair pr0n of course ;)

TC :)

It could be that when r0jaws swapped the 6522s over, he fried the other one from the original fault, so he wouldn't know if one or both have gone to retro heaven....

Thank you indeed Zetr0, it is very much appreciated (both)

That is most kind of you my friend

Look forward to assessing the RAM expansion too but don't forget the boot floppy, (the most interesting bit) ;)

Thanks again
Best Wishes
