So when I popped by to visit the splendid John (Merlin1967) on these very forums I noticed he had a couple of forlorn looking old pets in the hallway.

Transpired a friend at work had asked him to see if they worked and move them on. I felt very sorry for the two old girls and fancied a bit of a project so John kindly gave them a good test, the Pet 2001 had a blown PSU and garbled screen but the Pet 8032 was working perfectly apart from no keyboard buttons other than the 1 digit and looking very tired, tatty and unloved.

That was Tuesday night... so over the last 48hrs (in between work, sleep and my three dizzy kids) I have cracked on with a full restoration and she now looks like she's just dropped off Peddles production line :D

Before:

First things first lets fix the keyboard.... think the fault is fairly obvious :-)

Complete strip down, all the keys in a bowl of oxy action for 12 hours, PCB removed and cleaned with alcohol spray, press contacts cleaned and springs cleaned then re-assembled

Next case fully dismantled, separated from base, monitor shroud removed and then 6 hours of wet and dry sanding 400, 1000 then 14000 grade to get all the imperfections and gouges nice and flat :-)

My friend who works at a car body shop in Mansfield owed me a favour which meant him working through his dinner break, took the back off of a keyboard for my 8096SK for him to colour match and gave instructions for a slight fleck in the paint finish and a semi matt laquer just like the original as gloss would not suit it at all.

Picked it up on the way home from work last night and was absolutely chuffed with the finish, exactly what I wanted... genuinely looks perfect, colour and texture :-)

Re-assemble main components..... then motherboard into the dishwasher and left to dry overnight.. came up super shiny!

Keyboard works again... Hazzar!

So that was it... almost done... only problem was the missing case badge to finish it off... replacements do not exist unfortunately so I set to work designing a replacement on Photoshop to the exact measurements as the raised mount for it was still on the case.

Took it to a friend who actually works for a sign writer but they have a vinyl printer, he received a ranting from his manager who walked in with me stood there just as it came out of the printer but it was worth the agro as my measurements were spot on!

So here she is... all done...

New case badge installed with the help of some soapy water

A couple of wires on the PSU replaced as they looked to be brittle and working perfectly...

Not bad for two days graft and hopefully good for another 35 years!

Before and after :D

Wow! What a nice restoration in such a short amount of time. Having people who owed you favors worked out great! I'm glad it found it's new home. I have three PETs but only one of them works 100%. They are on my project list but I just haven't had the time.

Thanks so much for sharing your work!

Heather

excellent work ....hangs head in shame ....mine still needs doing :-)

So what's the opening times for this museum of yours?

Thanks Heather.. I have a couple of SK's and the 2001 that I also got from John all of which have various issues so I'm hoping with some musical chip swapping action I can get two of the three working :D

Im hopefully going to get my hands on a PetDisk as that seems easiest way to get hold of some interesting software.

Lol.... Is there a UK source for a petdisk or is it just the bitfixer website?

Also I seem to have a couple of optional roms I stalled, one is visicalc but the other is not labled, is there any way of checking the from basic?

I got a mail from biodiversity last week saying he's back in production again so if you order from him it shouldn't take as long as it used to.... Looking at getting one myself to go with the awesome petdisk :-)

I bought mine from BitFixer last year.

Sorry I don't know about being able to access ROMS from Basic. I tend to learn just enough about a system to play games on it but Bas or Heather might know.

I was wondering if BitFixer was still selling them or not. I haven't talked to him in a while so I'm not certain. I have one of my PetDisks that hasn't worked since I assembled it. I need to remove some of the components to troubleshoot. :(

I like it as you have the program files on the card like a single large drive (but I don't think you can have folders?), the drive number is set using a jumper (from memory)
Also like the other SD2IEC units it uses standard commands like LOAD "$",9 and LIST to view the contents and LOAD "blah",9 etc.

Not sure if anyone wrote a menu system for it?

Not sure if TheCorfiot liked his though as it looks like he sold it a few weeks back

I was also thinking about the ROM, if you know the memory location the ROM is mounted could you use the SYS command from basic to try and work out what it is?

Hey Mat.... I gave you the wrong PET on Tuesday....

The one for you is in the garage in a 'few' parts... Nothing you can't sort...

Can I have my 8032 back please, and I'll get this other one ready for you :D.

Seriously though, great job, if I didn't know better, I would have said its a different PET.

Lets hope you can get the 2001 up and running .

@sir_beaker

I have another petdisk which is why i sold the other, it's a fantastic device.

I do on occasion run my PET with dual 3040 drives too ;)

:)

Aw shucks, I was hoping, if it wasn't a case of you not liking it, then you were going to come back and say you sold it because you didn't need it any more as you'd invented and was prototyping something even cooler  Maybe something that could switch between 40 and 80 character display, although it's probably not possible

Aysel, did the disk still work? Did it have anything interesting on it?
