I have read and read and read in this and other forums about hard disc drives on Amiga 1200 and I am confused.
I have seen "max 4gb partition" "max 4gb disc" "max 8gb disc" "just under 4gb partition" "2gb partition"....
This is how it is: I have a 20gb laptop disc I thout I could use on my Amiga 1200. I am about to buy 3.1 kick and 3.1 WB. I want to make things as easy as it can be, can I use that 20gb disc? I dont care if WB only can show and use 4gb of the 20, I think that is plenty of space anyway.

Please give me some hints! =)

Using the standard FFS (Fast File System) you can use any drive no matter what it's size. If the drive is larger than 4GB then the largest partition size you can have is 4GB using WB3.1.

Take a look at Classic Workbench:

http://classicwb.abime.net/

These packs make it very easy to setup large Disk support. As Blankstare says you can just use the first 4gb of your 20gb Disk using WB3.1 and standard file systems however if you want to use the rest of the Disk it isn't really that tricky to setup.

You will need to use a file system such as SFS which is included with Classic Workbench, see here for tips on how to setup SFS:

http://wiki.classicamiga.com/How_to_install_SFS_onto_a_real_Harddrive_within_WinUAE

And once you have SFS setup on your Hard Drive and you have installed Classic Workbench you just need to patch the SCSI.Device to a latter version in order to see the whole 20gb:

http://classicwb.abime.net/classicweb/tutorials.htm

See the secon tutorial for that, as you can see Classic Workbench uses a load module command to patch the SCSI.Device for you, so it is quite simple to setup.

Some tips:

-Your boot partition must be within the first 4gb of the drive and ideally <1gb
-Other partitions can be any size as long as you use SFS or another file system like PFS3
-If you intend just to use standard FFS then keep within the first 4gb of the drive for all partitions and keep them smaller than 2gb

All the best,

Steve.

You all must excuse me. But Classic Workbench, is that a system I install on my Amiga or as an emulator on my PC?
If it is for installation on Amiga, how do I install it? Whare do I bay it (or is it free?)

It has happend alot since I owned my old A500 when I was young

Either, my friend Dale helped me out with mine and we got it on emulator first then transferred it onto Amiga though due to the complexity of this (that neither of us realised how time consuming it was) you're better off doing it on hardware only. ClassicWB is definitely the way to go though, I only have a 4GB card in my A600 and that's about enough for all my WHD load games and still plenty left for demos and other stuff. :)

As Tokyoracer says you set it up on the Emualtor and then your transfer it to the real Amiga.

It needs to be activated with real Disks (WB3.x) or with ADF's.

If you wanted you could send me your HDD and I would be happy to set it up for you

I believe it is a build of workbench available from this site:

http://classicwb.abime.net/index.htm

There are different versions depending on how well accellerated your Amiga is, from the Full version, down to the 68k version. Download one and follow the instructions to install it.

I'm following this thread with interest as I'm currently trying to set up a 4Gb Sandisk CF card for an A600 (68k version of classic). I'll probably try following the instructions on the classic workbench site, as well as those here.

Edit: Apologies, I couldn't see any posts after 11am when I replied here!

How about Better Workbench instead Classic? It is aimed to less powerful machines as the A600/A500/2000 with just a humble 68000 CPU inside. ;)
