What's the difference between Amiga CD & Amiga CD32?......

Is not the opening of a joke I know! :)x - I really do not know! - sorry for being such a noob!!

I guess the Amiga CD was an 'add-on' drive for 500/600/1200????

Anyway - I have an Amiga CD32 and my questions are:

1) Can you play Amiga CD games on a standard CD32?

2) I know somebody selling 'Fighting Spirit' cheap - but it just says 'Fighting Spirit Amiga CD' does anybody know if there were separate versions for 'CD & CD32'?

3) They also have ' Street Racer' so - the same as above - but Street Racer is not mentioned on Retro Collect? so presume there is no CD32 version?

Sorry if this is all a bit confusing!

Your help is much appreciated as always! :)

To get down to simple terms,
The CDTV IS a A500 with a Proprietary CD drive in a set top box. Since the CD standards were not defined at the time, each manufacture had there own drive, the CDTV was/is basically a A500 with a CD Rom drive "Hacked" on.
The A570 is a CD "Add on" for the A500 making the A500 A full CDTV

The CD32 IS a watered down version of the A1200 with a new "cheaper" graphics Chip

As far I know, all CDTV games can be played on a CD32, but the reverse is not true. Like all A500 technically should work on an A1200. Most CDTV games were infact A500 games just put on a CD.

With add ons both systems can be expanded into 100% full Amigas

AFAIK there is no Amiga CD, any "add-on Drives" would be numbered like A570, A "prototype" A1200 CD was made but not released.

Graphics capabilities were the same in the CD32 as in the A1200, except they were extended with a new custom chip called Akiko, which did the job of converting between chunky and planar.

Not a brilliant job of it, but it was faster than trying to do it with a 68020 and only chip RAM.

The CD32 was so similar to the A1200 that I played many a CD32 game on my A1200.

Fightin Spirit will work on CD32 :) You will find quite alot of Amiga CD games run on CD32, Usually they say on the box, ask the seller if it does. The only limiting factor is Chipmem requirements and processor speed. The CD32 needs a bootfile on the CD too, so that is quite important. Basically there isn't much difference between the two formats, but just be aware that not ALL Amiga CD titles will run on CD32, and you need an emulator to run CD32 games on an AGA Amiga with CD drive (Just to emulate bootup requirements, and Akiko mainly).

think of the CD32 as an unexpanded A1200 with no keyboard and a CD drive instead. so this means AGA, 68020

now as has been said the CDTV and A570 are basically A500s with a CD drive. so this means ECS, 68000

now a cd disk is a cd disk is a cd disk and the contents can usually be read by any CD drive even if the machine can not run/play the game/app
