I recently today upgraded this old 32 bit computer that came with a 56k modem up to a lan pci card after i installed it and turned it on,
It wil do that horrible long beep noise and not startup, i seated the card proberly, under its original 56k modem

Yeah, i have, it has 3 pci slots, you mean i should try one of the others? the lan card is a realtek.

yes try to place the card on a different PCI slot, it happened to me sometimes and solved by simply swapping PCI slots (something to do with DMA if I recall).

Can you verify that the lan card works that could be your problem also...

remove all cards and try with the LAN card on each PCI slot. If none work, your card is not compatible with your mobo for some reason.

Hmm, i dont think that will change so much, i had pulled out the modem and tested all slots and the computer was designed for windows 98

if the computer doesn't POST it has nothing to do with windows 98 or any other OS.

check RAM, video (non-existant or complete failure, improperly seated...) and CPU

I havent touched any of those things, how can that suddenly go bad? and i forgot to tell that im installing dos on it and would hopefully work after that and get cd rom drivers on it again.

things can get loose just by opening the comp..banging it around....

you can also potentially fry things by just touching them when you open the case and mess around with them via static electricity....

i have seen people fry their motherboard just by accidentally dropping a screw in it...turning it on and shorting it out...

i have seen cards die when the computer was moved, turned back on and the card was loosened enough and something shorted there too...

it is all certainly possible...

a board not posting is usually one of those things, or a completely dead motherboard...

one of the problems with PCs (well, computers...electronics in general) is that you can just turn them on one day and find out that something insides time has just simply come...

if it came from a working system ,is it possible to put it in that one and see if it posts?

does the pc your trying it in post without the card?

it is/was unclear if the computer will no longer post at all

or just not with the card installed...
